WATER & LAND
SOLUTIONS
• Frank Farms Mitigation Bank
• USGS Cataloging Unit 03020201 (Upper Neuse River)
DWR Sub -basin 03-04-01
Drains to Flat River (WS -III; NSW) and eventually Lake Michie (water
supply)
• Rougemont, NC / Durham County
• • Private stream restoration project to provide compensatory mitigation
credits
• —10,189 linear feet of perennial streams on Frank property
• Active agricultural parcel that was suggested for stream
restoration by the Durham Soil and Water Conservation District
• Stream function is impaired by lateral scour and excessive erosion
• Side tributaries have incised and headcuts are migrating upstream
due to the main stem incision
• 4-8 foot vertical (unstable) stream banks throughout portions of
the project
• Stream channel has lost connection with floodplain; tortuous and
irregular meander pattern is present in upper reaches
• Sedimentation from lateral erosion represents the most significant
pollutant source associated with on-site streams
• Restoration of this series of tributaries would restore/protect
through to the headwaters
• This stream section potentially represents the largest source of
sediment/nutrients along this section of the Flat River

• • Buffer lose to lateral scour
• Flows to water supply watershed (Lake Michie and Falls Lake)
• UNRBA projects significant growth and land use change moving in
this direction by 2025
• • Options currently in negotiations with landowner (Frank is a willing
• landowner)
• On-site streams, buffer, and wetlands have been assessed but not
surveyed
• Next step will be to verify potential enhancement/restoration
efforts (credits) and finalize negotiations with landowners
• Macrobenthic, water quality data, and survey will be conducted
