Re: Year 2 Monitoring Report Review Comments
Little Lick Creek Riparian Buffer Restoration Site
Durham County
DMS Project ID: 92542
DWR #13-0577
The Division of Water Resources received the Year 2 Monitoring Report for the above -
referenced site submitted February 2016 by Division of Mitigation Services (DMS).
Vegetation success criteria for this site is an average density of 320 planted hardwood stems per
acre surviving after five monitoring years. Vegetation data was collected in October, 2015. Data
in the report shows that 25% of the total CVS plots failed to meet success criteria. However, the
plot data shows that the average success criteria is above the vegetation success criteria with an
average of 429 planted stems/acre. Table 5 (Vegetation Condition Assessment) provides
additional vegetation problem areas:
14.3% (1.74 acres) of the site has dense Japanese honeysuckle and Chinese lespedeza
competing with planted woody vegetation.
Note: documentation (site map/plot location/etc) showing where these areas are located
on the site were provided in the report and treatment is being recommended to remedy
the problem. However, no specific plan is being proposed.
In closing, invasive species should be closely monitored and a plan to address these species
should be considered. It should be noted that if the areas where invasive species are present
become larger, and the vigor of planted stems becomes more impaired, it may necessitate
development of a contingency plan at the time DWR performs the site closeout visit.
