You specifically inquired about the possibility of connecting to Bryant Pond Lane to the south rather than Timken Forest Lane to cross Reedy Branch at a less sinuous portion of the stream for minimization of impacts. The proposed location of the stream crossing for the connection to Abbington was dictated by several factors. First, the existing stubs within Abbington created fixed tie in points for the connection of the internal roads within Sweetwater to Abbington. The connection to Timken Forest Drive will immediately provide quicker access to US 64 Hwy for the residents of the western portions of Abbington Forest. Currently, the residents of the western portion of Abbington must travel almost a mile through small, low speed subdivision roads to access US 64 Hwy, with at least four stop sign intersections. Once the Sweetwater roads are constructed, residents in the western part of Abbington will be able to travel approximately 0.6 miles to access US 64 Hwy through Sweetwater on larger roads with increased speeds, with only a traffic circle and one stop sign intersection. Therefore, it is anticipated that the residents of the western portion of Abbington will be utilizing the roads within Sweetwater for travel from Abbington to US 64 Hwy and travel from US 64 Hwy to Abbington. Additionally, the connection to Abbington will eventually provide access for the residents of Abbington to the future commercial area in the northern portion of the project without having to travel on US 64 Hwy. Therefore, Richardson Road, Core Banks Street and Timken Forest Drive within Sweetwater will essentially serve as collector roads providing residents of Abbington access to both US 64 Hwy and the future commercial area. The connection to Abbington is anticipated result in significant traffic coming through the Sweetwater project from Abbington as residents of Abbington travel to and from US Hwy 64 and the future commercial area. The connection to Abbington could not be shifted south to the Bryant Pond Lane stub to cross Reedy Branch at a less sinuous portion of the stream for several reasons. Most importantly, the connection to Bryant Pond Lane would have resulted in extending Bryant Pond Lane to connect to Lowland Street, which has residential lots on both sides. This would have directed all traffic to and from Abbington through a small subdivision road in a high pedestrian area, which creates a major safety issue. Additionally, this connection would have required a stop sign at the intersection with Lowland Street, creating traffic congestion. The proposed location of the connection to Abbington from Timken Forest Drive routes the traffic to and from Abbington around the subdivision, minimizing the interaction with vehicles and pedestrians, and provides a free flowing traffic pattern to and from Abbington. This is a much more efficient and safer connection to Abbington than providing the connection to Bryant Pond Lane. Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
