Subject: NCDOT Ferry - South Dock Dredging Request

After the storm this past weekend a shoal has formed in the ferry channel leading into the Southdock basin. This shoal is
causing ferries to maneuver very carefully around it or risk running aground. In addition to the previously permitted
dredge area (see black outlined area on attached map) the NCDOT Ferry Division is requesting authorization to perform
dredging activities in the area outlined in red on the attached survey map.
The area of the shoal is approximately 100 feet wide and 100 feet long. The current depth of the area is 3.5 feet. We are
requesting to dredge the area to the permitted depth of 12 feet which will be approximately 3,000 cubic yards of
material removed and pumped into the Southdock Spoil Site. Due to the recent project by the Highway Division to
rebuild the dunes along NC 12 in Ocracoke there is more than sufficient room for this material in the spoil site. Dredging
for both of these areas will take place at the same time in the next few weeks and will be completed by the end of
March 2016.
