Dear Ms. Manuel,
Carolina Water Service, Inc. of NC (CWSNC) is in receipt of the above -mentioned Notice of Violation dated June
7th and provides additional information below.
CWSNC had a Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) event on May 13th. The cause of the May 13th SSO of 700 gallons,
500 gallons to surface water of the Upper Little River (Lake Trace) was caused by debris in sewer main downstream from
manhole #18 at 7034 Pine Road, Sanford NC. CWSNC was notified at 8:45 AM of the spill. The SSO was confirmed at
9:00 AM, and a contractor called onsite. The sewer main was jetted, last jetted in 2017 as part of the 10% annual
cleaning, to clear the blockage, confirmed by camera, and the line repaired at 11:00 AM. The area cleaned/limed, and
the surrounding lines were inspected to evaluate other potential problems. No fish kill occurred, and no environmental
impact was noted. Fecal coliform samples were collected and analyzed. Results were: Upstream from site, 1700
MPN/100mL, SSO site, 1400 MPN/100mL, and downstream from site, 1400 MPN/100mL. CWSNC currently has one
planned project, which includes videoing and prioritizing repairs for the Carolina Trace Collection System to be
completed in 2024.
