There are two areas that we would like to perform dredging activities, Site 1 and Site 2. Below are the descriptions for each area and they are marked on the attached map. This dredging project will be completed by the Marine Maintenance crew with the pipeline dredge that is currently in use. The total amount of material to be removed from these two sites is an estimated 4,500 cubic yards. The material will be pumped into the Southdock Spoil Site. Due to the recent project by the Highway Division to rebuild the dunes along NC 12 in Ocracoke there is more than sufficient room for this material in the spoil site. Dredging for both of these areas will take place at the same time in the next few weeks and will be completed by the end of March 2016. Site 1— The proposed area has been dredged many times before under our current permit but has recently built back up to a point that is causing trouble for the ferries coming in and out of the terminal. The sand caught here creates a very shallow and long point that extends into the deeper water channel. Dredging operations will be kept 10' off of the bulkhead Dimensions of Project Area: Length - 100' and Width - 50' Square Footage: 5,000 sq. feet Current Depth: 2.5' Depth: Permitted 12' Material to be Removed: Estimated 1,500 cubic yards Site 2 — After the storm during the first week of February 2016 a shoal has formed in the ferry channel leading into the Southdock basin. This shoal is causing ferries to maneuver very carefully around it or risk running aground. Dimensions of Project Area: Length - 100' and Width - 100' Square Footage: 10,000 sq. feet Current Depth: 3.5' Depth: Permitted 12' Material to be Removed: Estimated 3,000 cubic yards If you need anything else or any additional information please let me know Thank you, Catherine Peele Environmental Specialist Ferry Division 252 305 7288 mobile cdpeele@ncdot.gov 159 Lucinda Drive Powells Point, NC 27966 M + Email correspondence to and from this address is subject to the North Carolina Public Records Law and may be disclosed to third parties Email correspondence to and from this sender is subject to the N.C.
