Duke Energy Progress, LLC, is providing your office with a summary page containing analytical data regarding tritium concentrations in conjunction with the development and submittal to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) of the 2023 BSEP Annual Radiological Environmental Operating Report. This information is being provided with the understanding that it is generated pursuant to the requirements of the nuclear operating licenses issued by the NRC to the plant and is not a requirement of the NPDES program. Sergei Chernikov, NCDEQ, NPDES Wastewater Permitting Don Safrit, Duke Energy Carolinas, Permitting and Compliance Eric Caison, BSEP Nuclear Environmental Field Support 2023 BSEP Discharge Channel Tritium Sampling and Data Monthly samples are collected upstream of the ocean discharge pumps which pump water from the BSEP discharge channel into the Atlantic Ocean (NPDES Outfall 001). The samples are collected over a month time period using a composite sampler with, typically, 50 milliliter aliquots being collected every 4 hours. Zero (0) of the twelve samples from the discharge channel indicated the presence of tritium. This is based on the sample analysis lower limit of detection (LLD) criterion of 250 pCi/L.
