This compliance inspection was conducted by DWR staff person Mr. Jim Gonsiewski. The septic tank (1,200 gallons, baffled) is located near the north side of the house. The line from this tank runs northeast to a 420 square foot subsurface sand filter, then southeast to the chlorinator and 60 gallon baffled chlorine contact chamber. The line then runs north to two 2,000 gallon storage/pump tanks (interconnected in series). A control box with a rain sensor is adjacent to these tanks. The line from these tanks runs east to the 0.38 acre spray field with five (5) spray heads. The field is surrounded by a 2-wire fence. The system is well maintained and appears to be operating without any major problems. While inspection of the wastewater irrigation system reflects compliance with Permit No. WQ0016379, the following item of concern was noted: 1) Mr. Wiygul stated that he checks the tablets in the chlorinator monthly along with the components of the system. He keeps a record of the inspections. Permit Condition III. (12)(b) lists a specific inspection frequency for the chlorinator (weekly). Additionally, the permittee signed the current operational agreement as part of the permit renewal process. It also lists these requirements. It was recommented that he begin inspecting the chlorinator weekly and maintain a record of these inspections on the inspection log. He maintains an excellent log book for the system. Failure to abide by the conditions contained in the permit may subject the permittee to enforcement action by DWR in accordance with North Carolina General Statute 143-215.6Ato 143-215.6C and/or revocation of this permit. Mr. Wiygul stated that he last pumped out the septic tank in 2018. He had a receipt for this pumping. Mr. Gonsiewski reminded him that the DEQ recommends that a septic tank be pumped every 3 to 5 years. Currently there are 6 individuals living at the residence. The system is very well run and maintained.
