Enclosed are the original and one copy of the Groundwater Monitoring Report on forms GW-59 and GW-59A, and
the lab report for Allens, Inc. (Aliens) facility located in Turkey (Sampson County) for samples collected in March,
2011.
The initial result for monitoring well MW-1 was 22.5 mg/1 for Total Organic Carbon. Consistent with the permit
requirements, Aliens requested that another sample be taken from this well since the result was greater than 10 mg/l.
Another sample was collected by our contract laboratory, Microbac, on April 5, 2011. The result for the re -test was
20.2 mg/1 for Total Organic Carbon. Given this, the next sampling event will include additional parameters for
MW-I to identify the source of elevated total organic carbon. At this point, Aliens staff plans to ask the laboratory
to analyze for phenols and Dissolved Organic Carbon in addition to the routine parameters. If NCDENR has any
specific parameters to add to the list, please let us know.
There were also some exceedances of the 250 mg/I standard for chlorides in MW-1 and MW-2. MW-1 was 265
mg/l and MW-2 was 360 mg/l. Based on a review of the more recent data, this appears to be the first time these
wells have had exceedances for chlorides. Aliens staff is perplexed by these results for several reasons:
1) Wastewater applications are now spread over additional irrigation acreage (Rowan Road), so wastewater
loadings for chlorides are likely less Shan they have been historically.
2) There have not been any changes made to wastewater lagoon operations.
3) The primary sources of chloride in the process wastewater would be from salt (sodium chloride) used in the
vegetable canning process and for regenerating water softeners. A review of wastewater concentrations for
salt relatedparameters shows fairly consistent levels of sodium. There is less data on chlorides (since it is
only analyzed 3 tines per year) and that data is variable. (Allen staff has requested that the laboratory
check the two highlighted results.) Despite this chloride variability in wastewater, it does not seem that
wastewater salt concentrations would support the groundwater chloride concentrations noted in this r oft- �` I

4) Based on groundwater elevations, MW4 is the background well but MW-I has the next highest
groundwater elevation. It seems groundwater flow direction is to the south, toward Field D and Six -Runs
Creek. If wastewater was the source of these elevated chloride levels, is seems strange that MW-3 is not
impacted.
Finally, the pH level of the groundwater samples in all the groundwater monitoring wells is below the lower range
PH standard of 6.5 standard units. Each well is below this standard, including the background wells. At the Rowan
Road site, the pH level of the groundwater,was consistently below this level even before the irrigation site was ever
used. This concern was brought up during the permitting process and Allens was told to monitor for awhile and then
submit a request to modify the permit standard for pH based on what apparently is regional groundwater
characteristic.
