Box 29535 Raleigh, North Carolina 27626-0535 Gentelmen: In reference to North Mills River Recreation Area, NPDES Permit #NC0020486, Henderson County, NC, we reply to your request for a narrative description of the sludge management plan for the subject wastewater treatment facility. There are no sludge handling treatment units on site nor is the sludge discharged to the receiving waters. The U.S. Forest service, through DDK Evironmental, contracts the pumping of excess solids as indicated by the increasing MLS ( mixed liquor suspended solids). The operator in responsible charge or on -site operator makes this assessment based on MLS lab results. As the MLS increases beyond the recommended concentration, solids are wasted from the activaated sludge system. The contract hauler takes the waste activated sludge to a local municipality which accepts such or another wastewater treatment plant which has experienced an upset, and is in need of reseeding. Should you have any questions regarding the pumping and disposal of sludge for this facility, please contact DDK, Inc. at 828-884-5589.
