Typical Cross Section Description: Annual Avg Daily Traffic (vehlhrlday): Desi n/Future: Year: Existin : 3900 Year: 2013 General Project Narrative: Subregional tier bridge to culvert: The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) proposes to replace bridge 42, in Alamance County, with a bottomless 3-sided (Description of Minimization of Water culvert, and associated roadway work. The bridge is located on Mebane Oaksr Rd. (SR 1007) over unnamed trib. to Haw River. The existing bridge is a timber bridge deck on Quality Impacts) timberjoists single span approximately 18'-6". The existing structure sufficiency rating was listed as 16.3 on the Bridge Inspection Report (from August 29 2012).The proposed structure will be a 20'-0" span, by 4'-6" bottomless box culvert with a concrete footing keyed into bedrock. The proposed struture will be approximately 48.5' in length. The project limits extend from station 10+00 to Station 13+75. The project will increase impervious surface by 11,650 sf (0.27 ac). The increase flow from impervious surfaces will be directed through existing grassed channels on the northeast and southeast sides of the poposed bottomless culvert; and through relocated grassed channels lined with matting on the northwest and southwest sides of the proposed bottomless culvert. This treatment provides sufficient filtration in accordance with the NCDOT Alternative Design Criteria. This project's Area of Potential Effects includes 75ft to either side of the bridge and 300ft from each end, allowing for on-site detours or variant replacement designs, if necessary. However, only minor ditch line impacts are anticipated. The entire APE is to be considered for archaeological assessment, though as a replace in-place project, the review centers on the existing 60 ROW plus a reasonable construction easement. SUMMARY OF CULTURAL RESOURCES REVIEW Brief description of review activities, results of review, and conclusions: Aerial mapping and topography of this rural location was examined. Records at the Office of State Archaeology were reviewed. USGS quadrangle mapping depicting previously reviewed areas and site locations was copied. No previously documented archaeological sites were noted, nor were there any environmental reviews in the nearby area. A reconnaissance conducted on July 27, 2012. For this project, much of the APE has been modified by the existing bridge construction and road. Expectations that an intact or otherwise significant archaeological resource might be impacted are low for this replace in place project. B�ief Explanation of why the available information provides a reliable basis for reasonably predicting that there are no unidentified historic properties in the APE.• The undertaking involves replacing an existing bridge in-kind. No archaeological sites have been recorded and documented with the Office of State Archaeology. This is a relatively small undertaking. Much of the APE has been disturbed by the existing transportation feature, bridge No. 42 on SR 1007. These factors suggest that undocumented, significant and undisturbed archaeological sites are unlikely to be impacted within the APE.
