MCCRORY GOVERNOR September 14, 2015 Wilmington Regulatory Field Office US Army Corp. of Engineers 69 Darlington Avenue Wilmington, NC 28403 ATTN SUBJECT Dear Sir, Mr. Brad Shaver NCDOT Coordinator NICHOLAS J. TENNYSON SECRETARY Application for Section 10 and Section 404 Nationwide Permit 6 for Field Investigations for a Proposed Replacement of Bridge No. 16 over the Intracoastal Waterway on NC 210/50, TIP B-4929, in Pender County, BRSTP-50(10), WBS No. 40233. L 1 The NCDOT is planning a limited subsurface investigation to gather information for the foundation design of the above-referenced structure. The investigation will take place along the preferred alternative alignment (see attached). A private engineering firm has been selected to conduct the investigation with up to 58 Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings. The majority of the borings will be located in the Intracoastal Waterway and surrounding wetlands. These 58 borings will be performed in the approximate locations shown on the attached site map. The borings in the Intracoastal Waterway will be advanced from a floating barge, and will consist of turning or driving 3-inch to 8-inch diameter steel casings into the bottom creating minimal disturbance. Other drilling tools will be used to sample the sediments and advance the hole within the steel casing. The steel casing will be removed upon completion of the boring. Any borings drilled on land or wetlands will be performed with a rubber tired drill rig or low ground pressure tracked drill rig. These borings will also be 3-inch to 8-inch in diameter. Any disturbance from the borings should be limited to within a 2-foot radius of the boring location. All borings will be drilled between the dates of October 1, 2015 and January 30, 2016.
