Station D9 and T7, 7.15 miles below High Point Dam 'These stations are located on the Deep River at SR 1129 in Wilford L/ County. The substrate at (D9) consists of dark mud that had a strong odor. This station is about 150 feet upstream from the Freeman Mill Dam. The average depth at the station during the study was 6.96 feet. Average depths below the Freeman Mill Dam ranged from .77 to .96 feet. This station is located .75 miles from the mouth of Richland Creek. The water at this site is an opaque pinkish gray and is slow moving but not stagnant. The cross sectional areas of the chemical/physical sampling stations ` were measured several times during this study. Table 8 summarizes the results. The raw data is included in Appendix A. The cross sectional area of the Deep River is extremely variable. kJ1 The river flows through deep pools, shallow riffle areas and narrow, deep 5 Q constrictions at bridge crossings. The numerous dams back up the river flow, increasing cross sectional areas at stations located above the dams. The largest crosssections were measured at D5, at the new I-85 bridge, at D9, above Freeman Mill Dam, and at D25 above the Worthville Dam. Cbltrane Mill Dam was releasing water during most of the study, so the cross sectional area was not elevated. The cross sectional measurements at D19 were made below the dam, and reflect unimpounded river conditions. W I D T H. The upgrading in progress at the Eastside High Point and Randleman OEM)wastewater treatment plants should improve the Deep River's water 10 quality substantially. Jamestown's effluent is presently producing dissolved oxygen problems in the upper river. When Jamestown is routed to High Point and treated properly, the DO should recover quickly. Every effort should be made to assure that the plant im- provements keep to their planned schedule. Compliance schedules should be enforced at both Eastside High Point and Randleman. 2. The pretreatment programs for Eastside High Point and Randleman have identified indirect dischargers of heavy metals to these facilities. Efforts are underway to bring these dischargers into compliance with state water quality standards. These programs should be monitored carefully and kept to strict compliance schedules. } 3. Indirect dischargers to Eastside High Point, Randleman and Jamestown Mal should be evaluated to begin to identify the toxic constituents in the POTW's waste which were not identified during the study. Follow- Malup studies should be performed to identify and remove these constituents. WM 4. The proposed N.C. water quality standards for nickel, lead, zinc and chromium should be used as target in -stream concentrations for the Deep River. 5. Fish in the Deep River should be sampled for nickel. Nickel was con- sistently detected in the water column samples. Sampling should also be continued for lead to further assess the potential problem. 6. Residual chlorine limits should be developed for the major dischargers to the Deep River. 7. Studies should be initiated to evaluate the longterm reactions of metals and other toxics in Deep River sediments. How will the formation of the Randleman Reservoir affect these reactions? -132- '. 11 (' sru _t a free -flowing system, but this would represent a very high load to impounded waters. Nitrogen (Table 4, 6 and 7, Figures 6 and 7). Concentrations of total nitrogen do not appear to have declined in the Deep River between 1983 and 1986 (see ambient data, Table 6), but there has been some change in the type of nitrogen that is discharged. Nitrification at the High Point plant has markedly reduced the amount of ammonia discharged to the Deep River (Figure 6). Concentrations of nitrate/nitrite remain high, but the peak is now observed just below Richland Creek at River mile 10. The 1983 peak in NO2/NO3 at River Mile 20 reflected instream conversion of ammonia to nitrate/nitrite. The reduction in the amount of ammonia discharged to the Deep River below Richland Creek should improve both instream toxicity and dissolved oxygen concentrations. Metals (Table 4, Figures 8 and 9). Prior chemical surveys have indicated that copper, zinc and nickel had reached acute or chronic toxic levels in either point souce discharges or in river water. Analysis of this problem is complicated by a high degree of temporal and spatial variability. The limited amount of chemical data indicated the both copper and zinc reached toxic levels below the Jamestown and High Point plants in 1983. The 1986 survey indicated that maximum copper concentrations in the Deep River (30uq/1) still occur below the High Point discharge. Only one site (B3) had a copper concentration above the North Carolina "action level" of 15 ug/l, and average 1986 concentrations were less than half of the 1983 concentrations. Nickel showed a similar distribution, with concentrations above the NC standard (50 ug/1) at the first two sites below the High Point discharge. Comparisons with prior years are difficult, as all nickel concentrations were less than the reporting limits (100ug/1) utilized in 1983-1985. Concentrations of zinc were never above the North Carolina action level during the 1986 survey, but maximum values occurred below the High Point and Asheboro discharges. In summary, the elevated metal concentrations recorded in the Deep River below the High Point discharge may still be causing some chronic toxicity problems. Chlorine (Table 7, Figures 10-12). Excessive chloterinat on has been a continuing problem with many of the Deep River dischargers, and this problem has continued through 1986. All dischargers have recently been requested to more carefully control their chlorination and a recent survey (October 1986) could not detect residual chlorine >0.1 mg/1 at any Deep River site. However, a value of 0.35 -26- Table 4. Chemical TEMP. C survey data, DO Conduc- tivity mg/l umho/cm August 1986, Deep River and NUTRIENTS (mg/1) pH NH3/ TKN NO2/ PO4 NH4 NO3 Richland Creek.
