1. INSPECT SEDIMENT FENCES AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK AND AFTER EACH RAINFALL. MAKE ANY REQUIRED REPAIRS

1. Obtain all necessary permits and plan approvals
2. Install gravel construction entrances first, and then reinforced silt fence outlets,
wattles and silt fences.
3. Finish clearing and grubbing any necessary areas on the lots as they are started.
4. Begin lot grading and excavation activities
5. Begin or continue with house construction activities.
6. Finish all rough grading and house construction.
7. Install driveways, walks and patios.
8. Begin fine grading of lot areas
9. Final grassing, mulching and stabilizing of lot. In most cases this will involve the
installation of sod on the lot. The silt fence will remain in place until the lots are
sodded or grassing is stabilized and takes hold.
10. Inspection and final acceptance letters

AN ALTERNATIVE IS TO MAKE NOTATIONS ON THE COPY OF THE APPROVED EROSION AND
SEDIMENTATION CONTROL PLAN THAT IS KEPT ON THE PROJECT SITE. RULE 15A NCAC 04B. 0131

MAINTENANCE OF EROSION AND SEDIMENTATION CONTROL MEASURES FOR LOT CONSTRUCTION
Gravel Construction Entrance - The gravel pad should remain in a condition to prevent mud or sediment from leaving the construction site. This may require periodic topdressing
with 2-inch stone. After each rainfall, inspect any structure used to trap sediment and clean it out as necessary. Immediately remove all objectionable materials spilled, washed,
or tracked onto public roadways.
Silt Fence - Sediment fences should be inspected at least once a week and after each rainfall event. Any repairs should be made immediately. Damaged or decomposed fabric
should be replacedpromptly. An sediment deposits that build u against the fence should be removed and disposed of properly to insure that the removed sediment does not

wash back against the fence. Adequate storage volume should be provided for behind the fence at tall times. Take care to not undermine the fence during cleanout operations.
Sodding - The sod should be properly maintained to insure that the grass take holds in the areas being secured. The sod should be watered as necessary to maintain adequate
moisture in the root zone and prevent dormancy of the sod. The sod should not be mowed to close, since this could inhibit adequate growth and stabilization of the root bed. The
sod should be limed and fertilized as per soil type recommendations and type of grass recommendations when and if possible.

Grassingand Mulching - The area to receive grassing and mulching should be properly fertilized and limed as necessary as an initial step in soil preparation. Once the grassing has

General - All measures will be inspected and corrections made after runoff producing rainfalls, or at least once per week minimum. The builder will insure that the construction
activities on any particular lot do not adversely affect any of the installed erosion control measures. If lot construction dictates, measures will be relocated on the lot to insure that the
potential for sedimentation runoff is eliminated as much as possible. Silt fences and gravel construction entrances will be maintained as suggested in the erosion control manual.
Sodding, seeding and mulching will be maintained to insure proper ground stabilizing cover.
Wattles - Wattles shall be inspected after significant rainfall events. Rills or gullies upslope of the wattle and any undercutting is to be repaired. Sediment deposits that impair the
filtration capability of the wattle shall be removed when the sediment reaches one-third of the wattles functional freeboard height. Removed sediment shall be deposited within the
project in such a way that the sediment is not subject to erosion by wind or water.
Reinforced Silt Fence Outlet - Remove sediment deposits as necessary to provide adequate storage volume for the next rain to reduce pressure on the fence/outlet. Take care
to avoid undermining the fence during cleanout. Remove and replace stone as necessary as it becomes clogged with sediment. Remove all fencing materials and unstable
sediment deposits and bring the area to grade and stabilize it after the contributing drainage area has been properly stabilized.
WATTLE CONSTRUCTION
1. Use a hand tool such as a mattox or pick to score the ground. Using a shovel,dig the trench to
the needed depth. Soil from excavating the trenches can be placed on the uphill, or flow side,
of the trench to be used during installation. For soft, loamy soils dig a 3-5 inch trench. For hard,
rocky soils dig a 2-3 inch trench.
2. Lay the first straw wattle snuggly in the trench. No daylight should be seen under the wattle.
Pack soil from trenching against the wattle on the uphill side. When installing running lengths
of straw wattles, butt the second wattle tightly against the first. DO NOT overlap the ends.
Stake the straw wattles at each end and four foot on center.
3. Stakes should be driven through the middle of the wattle, leaving 2-3 inches of the stake
protruding above the wattle. A heavy sediment load will tend to pick the wattle up and could
pull it off the stakes if the are driven down too low. It may be necessary to make a hole in the

wattle with the pick end of your mattox in order to get the stake through the straw. When straw
wattles are used for flat ground applications, drive the stakes straight down, when installing
wattles on slopes, drive the stakes perpendicular to the slope.
4. Drive the first end of the stake of the second wattle at an angle toward the first wattle in order
to help abut them tightly together. If you have difficulty driving the stake into extremely hard or
rocky slopes, a pilot bar may be needed to begin the stake hole.
