When removing trees along Smith Creek and the UT to Smith Creek (Permit Site 14), the clearing subcontractor (Smith-
Rowe) disturbed the bank of Smith Creek in multiple locations resulting in disturbance of the stream bank and sandy soil
falling into the creek. DOT has requested that the banks be shaped by hand, and the banks seeded with riparian seed
mix and coir fiber matted. We have also requested that the areas be temporarily isolated from the flowing stream by
placing sand bags or wattles (diversion dikes) in Smith Creek, and any accumulated sediments be removed from inside
the diversion dikes. At Smith Creek, we have no permitted impacts. However given the forecast for heavy rain tonight,
we decided to proceed with completing the repairs. The diversion dikes will be removed from the channel as soon as
the bank work is complete (which should be later today). At permit site 14, we'll isolate the work areas by pumping
around the flowing water while we work to temporarily stabilized the impacts. Site 14 will be permanently filled later in
the project.
The prime contractor (Dragados) has requested that Smith-Rowe remove the individuals responsible for disturbing the
banks from the project. DOT has requested that all other trees along the stream banks be removed by placing a chain
around the trees to ensure that the trees fall away from the stream.
I've attached a.pdf with pictures of the site, and I'll forward along Phil Sugg's (Roadside Environmental) inspection when
I receive it.
