Brian,
I agree with your list of items to be monitored. I will defer to Fritz on the exact location of the two monitoring
stations and the appropriate tides. Fritz, what do you think of monitoring every other day instead of daily and
sampling both low and high tide on that day (Of course, actual sampling time would vary). Also, you said that the
upper canal has little water on low tide so, a post-high falling tide might be best?
Regarding pesticides and herbicides, there is a body of literature (work in SC) on the impacts of golf courses on
estuarine waters. This literature should be reviewed and may provide relevant information that would eliminate the
need to sample the pond. Unless, existing data can predict what to expect, pesticides and herbicides concentrations
in pond water and sediments should be determined and sampled at, for example a mid point in the canal.
DO below 4mg/1 and/or a fish kill would would be appropriate criteria for work stoppage. Pumping air into the
canal would be useful in maintaining DO during the relatively short work period.
Hope this helps clarify what's needed to avoid and minimize the impacts of this project component.
Sincerely,
Ron Sechler

Based on our discussion on May 8 for monitoring requirements for the referenced project, I would like to get
some input from you on what should be included in the monitoring protocol. To summarize what I heard in the
meeting:
- daily monitoring for DO, salinity, conductivity, and temperature
- two monitoring locations -one at the discharge point to Slough Canal and one further downstream in the canal
- monitoring should be conducted during similar tidal stages
questions I have are: Are there thresholds that should trigger stoppage of work (e.g., DO below 4.0 mg/1, etc.)?
should pre-work sampling be done for pesticides, herbicides in the pond? Where along Slough Canal should the
monitoring be conducted?
If you can give me some basic requirements or procedures that you would like to see, I'll type it up and send it
around (DWQ, DCM, DMF, NMF) for comments. Then, we can send it to DOT for comments. Thanks.
Brian
