4a. Describe the existing conditions on the site and the general land use in the vicinity of the project at the time of this application:*
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) proposes the replacement of the
existing bridge over Beard Creek. The proposed project is located at Neuse Road (SR 1005).
The project area is predominantly rural and includes large, wooded areas interspersed with
agricultural fields and the wetlands associated with Beards' Creek and Cedar Gut.

The existing bridge has been determined to be functionally deficient. The proposed project includes the replacement of the existing bridge. The existing structure is three spans, 90-feet in
length. It has concrete deck girders. The bridge deck is 26-feet wide and is currently posted at 26 tons for single axle and 29 tons for semi -trailers.

Removal and replacement of bridge over Beard Creek. Equipment typical for road construction and grading will be used to construct the proposed project such as track hoes, bulldozers,
dump trucks, etc.
