The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is proposing to replace
bridge No. 354, a structurally deficient bridge on SR 1422 in Gaston County. SR 1422 is
a paved secondary road connecting SR 1421 and leading into SR 2004 in Cleveland
County, and the project vicinity is riparian forest and cut -over upland forest. The existing
structure is a wooden, two-lane bridge over an unnamed tributary of Gilliam Creek
(Index No. 12-108-11, Class Q. Bridge No. 354 is structurally deficient, and replacement
is recommended for the safety of the traveling public.
NCDOT proposes to replace the existing bridge with a single span 90' box beam bridge
in the same location. The proposed project will permanently impact 72 linear feet for
bank stabilization. NCDOT also proposes to temporarily impact 80 linear feet for
temporary dewatering. There will be no wetland impacts. NCDOT requests a regional
general permit (RGP) 50, and corresponding NCDWR general certification No.
4135 for this project.
As of September 30th, 2022, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS)
Information for Planning and Consultation (IPAC) lists the following federally protected
species within the study area, under the Endangered Species Act (ESA): the Bog Turtle
(Glyptemys muhlenbergii), and Dwarf -flowered Heartleaf (Hexastylis naniflora). Habitat

for both these species is not present in the project study area, and NC National Heritage
Program does not list any occurrences within 1 mile. As such, no impacts to threatened or
endangered species are expected.
A Historic Architecture and Landscapes No Survey Required From and a No
Archeological Resources Survey Required Form were signed on May 301h, 2017.
