Project Description — The project consists of replacing Bridge #30 over Reddick's Creek on
SR 1129 (Groometown Road) and improving roadway approaches. The existing 34' L X 22' W
reinforced concrete deck bridge on I-Beams is structurally deficient and will be replaced with a
new 90' L X 33' W, single span box beam bridge at the same location. The existing bridge has a
sufficiency rating of 39.8. An off-site detour will be utilized during construction. There are no
wetlands within the project area. There are, however, two features — Reddick's Creek (SA) and
a UT to Reddick's Creek (SB) — within the project. There are 91 linear feet of permanent stream
impacts proposed to Reddick's Creek that are restricted to the banks under the bridge for
stabilization purposes (i.e. rip rap will not be within the thalweg of the channel). The project
drainage system also consists of a grated inlet and pipe outfall that drain to an existing roadside
ditch from a dissipator pad that outlets at non erosive velocities prior to the riparian buffer.

Proposed Riparian Buffer impacts include 1,976 square feet in Zone 1 and 1,320 square feet in
Zone 2 to accommodate the wider span bridge and the necessary fill slopes. It should be noted
that there is a buffered, intermittent stream channel that parallels the existing roadway. The
project proposes no impacts to this adjacent channel or its associated riparian area. The
current design maintains the existing transportation facility (ETF) and does not propose to move
the fill slope and/or ditchline further into the riparian area associated with feature SB. A review
was conducted for the presence of Bald Eagle and small whorled pogonia, the only federally
listed protected species for Guilford County. A review of NCNHP mapping showed no known
occurrences of either species.

Project Description:Replacement of Bridge No. 30 on SRI129 in Gzidford County, North Carolina. The
NCDOT proposes to replace the siructurally deficient structure along with some minor ditch-line impacts
within a 400ft. (+ the bridge length) long and 80ft. wide archaeological APE area centered upon Bridge
No. 30 and [he SR1129 cenler-line. On-srte detoairs will NOT be utilized for the project.
5UMMARY OF CULTIIRAL RESOURCS I2VIEW
Brief description of review nctivities, results of revrew, and concdusians:
A map review and site file search was conducted at the Office of State Archaeology (OSA) on Tuesday,
April 30, 2010. This work disclosed the location of NO previously recorded archaeological sites situated
within the project's APE or adjacent to the APE, but did illustrate a number of recorded archaeological
sites that had been recorded within the general vicinity of the project study area. A review of Guilford
County National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) listed archaeological properties illustrated that no
sucli resources were situated within or proximal to the APE. Furthermore, topographic maps, historic
maps (NC maps website), USDA soit survey maps, aerial photographs, and the Google street view map
application were utilized/inspected to gauge environmental factors that may haue contributed to historic
or prehistoric sertlement within the project limits, and to assess the level of modem, slope, agricultural,
hydrological, and other erosive-type disturbances witUin and surrounding the archaeological APE.
BriefF,xplanation ofwhy the available informatian provides a reliable basis for reasonably predicting
that there nre na tnidentified historic properties in tle APE:
Archaeological site potential within the proposed APE impact area is relatively non-existent. Due to the
diminutive nature of this bridge replacement, the sloping and disturbed ground surfaces contained witliin
and adjacent to the existing r-o-w, and relatively minute construction footprint using no on-site
construction detours, tlie project, as proposed, is unlikely to affect any significairt NRIIP eligible cultural
resources. No further archaeological wark is recommended.
