North Carolina 27699-161 1 919 707.9000 1 week prior to sampling: Clean and clear discharge pipe: 1. If the pipe is covered, uncover it so that the effluent can flow freely and make enough room to get a sample bottle underneath the pipe without touching it. The area can be leveled back off after the annual sampling event. 2. Remove any debris from inside the pipe. 3. Remove any debris or vegetation surrounding the pipe that may be in the way of the contractor pulling the sample. Clean and clear the chlorinator: Do not inhale the chlorine fumes!! Always wear gloves when handling chlorine and wastewater equipment. 4. Remove the chlorinator tubes. 5. Flush the chlorinator and tubes with water. If using a water hose DO NOT put the hose into the chlorinator hold it above. You can use a nozzle to get a stronger flow if necessary. All of the debris should be flushed out and should exit the discharge pipe. 6. Clean the tubes. 7. Place 2-3 chlorine pucks in each tube. 8. Place the tubes back into the chlorinator. DO NOT SAMPLE immediately following a septic tank cleaning and or pump out. Let the system reset for 2-3 months before sampling. Septic Tank Maintenance: 1. You are required to inspect the septic tank at least yearly to determine if solids must be removed or if other maintenance is necessary. Septic tanks should be pumped out every five years or when the solids level is found to be more than 1/3 of the liquid depth in the septic tank compartment, whichever is greater. A pumping company can check the status periodically and determine when pumping is required. 1 1 5.' doh !►II ■ ' =•■ . . .1r.
