The subject facility has 23 wastewater irrigation fields. Presently, 19 of these fields are being Irrigated. The fields immediately adjacent to the non-functioning industry are fields A, B, C, and D. The other 19 fields are remotely located about 2 miles from the industry. These 19 are receiving irrigation of treated wastewater. Report Attachments 1 and 2 show the site plan for Irrigation fields A through D. Report Attachment 3 shows the remote irrigation fields which are on the south side of Rowan Road. These are irrigation fields 1 through 18 and 18A. Following the 3 site maps (Attachments 1, 2, 3) is a copy of the Permit WQ0004268 Attachment B which lists the 23 fields and shows the latitude/longitude, predominant soil series, and permit application rates. This is Attachment 4. • Attachment 5 is the soil test analysis results. Thefollowing tables are used to identify key soil test parameters and to relate site recommendations. Important note about soil test report attachment: the second page for each sample was used for special crgronomic concerns or recomMendations. None were provided. Thus, the soil report .shows odd pages only, such as 1 of 46, 3 of 46, etc Further, the lab only reports organic matter when it occurs as a significant component to affect fertilizer or pesticide recommendation& No organic matter content occurs on the report whkh reflects insignificant organic matter (feu than 1-256). Humic matter Is typically assumed to be 5096 of total organic matter. Humk matter then across all fields Is less than 1% which is expected for the sandy soils on this site. The humk matter content has no bearing on the use and management of this site. 1 TABLE 1e Sofl test data for key parameters Field Ca/Mg ratio pH P (ppm) K(ppm) Na(ppm) CEC Cur Zn2 FSP(%) 1 OK 7.1 328 184 ` 54 5.8 NC . Anywhere from 100-140 • pounds per acre per year N is adequate. Temper this with the PAN from the wastewaterso as not to exceed 1400N/acre-year. Also, N rites may be reduced where either of the fallowing occur. a. poor cover crop health b. existing or potential for N in groundwater monitoring wells c. another'36-50 pounds -per acre PAN can be applied to the ryegrass (check permit constraints) 3) P is significantly low iri fields 15 and 17. Apply 60 pounds per acre P205 to each field. The remainder of the fields will likely receive adequate P from the wastewater. P is adequate, high to Very high across the remainder of the fields. With cover crop and slope and soil type, loss,.of P to surface waters is very low. 3 4) K is significantly low only in Field 8. I do not recommend the high rate proposed in the soil test report. Apply 140 pounds per acre K20 to Field 8. Apply 40 pounds per acre K20 to the remainder of the fields. Temper these amounts based on loading of Kfrom the wastewater. 5) Only Field 8 calls for Mg amendment. Apply 60 pounds per acre elemental Mg. Do NOT use dolomitic lime for the Mg source as the soil pH is already at 7.0 . . 6) Across the board for all fields apply 15 pounds elemental S per acre Temper this with any S from the wastewater. 7) Across the board for all fields except A, B, C, D, apply 0.5 pounds elemental.B per acre. Temper this with any B from the wastewater (likely B not sampled in wastewater so apply the amendment). 8) Copper and zinc- the small amendments are very likely applied via wastewater. Make no specific amendments of Cu or Zn. - 9) With the exception of Field 18, all fields need a Mn amendment. I would go ahead and hit field 18 as well, the data could be an outlier. 4 pounds of Mn per acre. Note: there could be Mn deficiencies due to the soil pH: Mn is more effectively applied as a foliar amendment when needed. In lieu of 4 pounds per acre Mn, use plant tissue testing to determine the need for supplemental Mn. More information about plant tissue testing will follow: 10) The soil test report offers no recommendations for Ca. However, to help balance the Ca/Mg ratio for fields 11,15, and 17, 400-600 pounds per acre of elemental Ca could be applied. This can be driven by plant tissue analyses Instead of a default application. Do not use lime for the Ca. source as the fields already have pH at or above the recommended level. General Comments 1) Soil pH Is slightly elevated but not at a level where a default recommendation is made to try to drop soil pH. Any induced micronutrient deficiencies as a function of soil pH can be addressed with plant tissue testing on a case by case basis. The sulfur recommendations from Table 2 are agronomic recommendations and NOT intended as pH control. 2) Exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) is a calculated value All fields are in a good range with none approaching an action level of 10. The ESP values are well below those reported in previous annual reports which shows good dissolution of the sodium from when the industry was In operation. 3) Overall there are no major concerns from the soil test report across the site. The Na results from Field 8 are suspect, but since no other fields have a high ESP there is no concern there 4) l would recommend the use of plant tissue testing as a diagnostic tool when crop health appears impaired. This toot can preempt the need for default amendments as described several places above In this report. Plant tissue should be sampled at the first sign of stress (that is not related _ to too much wateror insufficient, water). Individual amendments of Mn, Zn, or B can be made as necessary. B is ,more critical for cotton which is not used at this site. Only apply micronutrients as necessary to support the recommendations from plant tissue testing. " Crop health and management The site is being managedwith a dual cropping system,. The bermudagrass on a number of fields is fair to marginal. Following the amendments recommended above should improve crop health. The'crop should provide adequate soil cover to maintain good erosion control and remove applied ,nutrients. Supplemental N may be necessary (again, tetnperthis with the PANJin the wastewater). The Winter overseed ryegrass is in good shape on fields•10-18A and. just coming on over the remaining f eWs There appears to.be no winter cover on fields A, B, C, D where there is no wastewater application. The rim-ss_ should be cut low or t. sprayed back (as the permiallows). by early April so as not to impair the lush firms growth of the bermudagrass in the spring. The timingof this is always weather dependent, but you should plan on this activity no later than April 15 es the absolute latest. Wastewater applications may need to be adjusted so that the wetter -fields are allowed to dry out enough to manage the ryegrass prior to. the April 15 cutoff point: Any supplemental fertilization as; recommended above should be applied to the bermudagrass after April 15. if any fields show poor to marginal bermudagrass coverage, applying.40-60 pounds per acre N can help them to provide lush growth. Apply this ONLY within permit constraints that limit N application as a function of PAN in the wastewater as described above. Please let me know if you have any questions on this reportor require additional information. This information is typically required to be maintained for a period of 5 years, but check your permit to be sure. Agronomic recommendations are based uponthe data, from the most recent soil testteport and imply no guarantee that following the recommendations will provide optimum crop health or permit compliance. Agronomic recommendations often need fine tuning as other factors such as weather and/or wastewater quality dictate. Plant tissue testing can assist with site management decisions between soil, testing events. Thank you for allowing us to provide this service. Sincerely, Karl A. Shaffer, L.S.. C.N.M.P.
