Corey Basinger, Regional Supervisor Water Quality Regional Operations Section Mooresville Regional Office Division of Water Resources, NCDEQ Subject: Notice of Violation and Intent to Assess Civil Penalty Tracking Number: NOV-2022-LV-0450 Permit No. NC0073571 North Iredell High School Iredell County RECEIVED/NCDEQ/DWR JUL 2 1 2022 WOROS MOORESVILLE REGIONAL OFFICE Mr. Basinger, Thank you for allowing North Iredell High School the opportunity to respond to the following Notice of Violation dated July 8, 2022; received July 11, 2022. This response pertains to the (1) BOD daily maximum exceedance events that occurred during the May 2022 monitoring period. Upon arriving at the plant on Monday, May 10, operators discovered that the air compressor belt broke over the weekend, leaving the plant without air for approximately 48 hours. Due to insufficient air supply, conditions were created that were not substantial enough for biologics of the plant, which allowed BOD levels to pass through the plant resulting in the violated BOD value. Operators responded by taking action to repair the air compressor and temporarily utilized two blowers until the air compressor was back online. Within the same day, the repair had been completed and plant the biological process was able to return back to normal operations before the next compliance sampling period. Following this event, the plant returned to compliance and continued to operate within compliance until the end of the month. It is always the goal of North Iredell High School to remain in compliance with regulations set forth by the Division of Water Resources. It is our request that our cooperation and action in these matters be taken into account by the Division when proceeding with enforcement.
