What is
Stormwater Runoff?
Stormwater runoff originates from a
rainfall event, flows over impervious
surfaces such as streets, sidewalks,
and buildings, and enters storm
drains. Debris and pollutants from
stormwater runoff enter directly
into creeks, rivers, and lakes. For the
City of Greensboro, this means that
stormwater flows into not only our
drinking water sources, but also to
communities downstream.
Horizontal directional drilling can
cause sediment (dirt, sand, etc.) and
drilling fluids to enter drainage
ways, ending up in our streams and
lakes and affecting the local
drainage system and water quality.
Sediment and wastewater can cloud
streams and destroy habitats,
blocking sunlight that aquatic plants
req u i re.
Drilling fluid can contain mixtures of
water, bentonite clay, polymer
extenders, copper drill lubricants,
and other additives. Addition of
these fluids into an ecosystem can
have detrimental effects. Sediment
and wastewater from pneumatic
operations should never be allowed
to leave a site.

landscape area to determine potential directions
that drainage may flow.

Mobile auto washing generates wash water that contains harmful materials such as detergents, oils, grease, solvents, heavy metals, and dirt. If not properly managed, the wash water can
discharge to streets, parking lots, and storm drains, which lead directly into lakes, rivers, and streams. This water is not treated or cleaned to remove pollutants and can harm fish and wildlife.
Even products labeled as "biodegradable" are harmful to the environment.
Environmental regulations prohibit the discharge of non-stormwater substances to the stormwater conveyance system. As a mobile auto washer, you need to be aware of regulations that apply
to you. This publication includes some practices that will assist in helping you obtain compliance while protecting Greensboro's water resources.

El agua de Iluvia que corre por las aceras,
estacionamientos, corredores y otras superficies
impermeables puede fluir directamente a las
alcantarillas. El agua contaminada desemboca al final en
nuestros arroyos y lagos locales. Los restaurantes de
Greensboro son reconocidos como importantes socios
de la comunidad; sin embargo, algunas de sus practicas
diarias pueden producir contaminacion que impacta de
manera importante la villa acuatica y la calidad del agua.
Los establecimientos que manipulan alimentos como
restaurantes, cafeterias institucionales, tiendas de
abarrotes, cafes, hospitales, hogares de ancianos
y escuelas, originan subproductos que pueden ser
nocivos si entran al sistema de alcantarillado. A
continuacion, se presentan algunas de las fuentes mas
comunes de contaminacion de estos establecimientos:
• Canecas de basura y contenedores de
grasas con filtraciones.
• Practicas de limpieza y eliminacion de
desechosinadecuadas.
• Descarga incorrecta de aguas residuales.
• Restos de comida, grasa y aceite de cocina
usados que no se eliminan de manera
adecuada.
• Tirar la basura en las zonas al aire fibre.
Para tratar este tema, la Division de alcantarillado
de la ciudad de Greensboro creo materiales
educativos para los administradores y empleados
de los restaurantes para prevenir la contaminacion
de las alcantarillas. Este material se debe ubicar en
areas de facil acceso para todos los empleados.
Los restaurantes estan obligados a prevenir la entrada
de contaminantes en las alcantarillas para cumplir con el
Codigo de normas de la ciudad de Greensboro (Capitulo
30, articulo 12, seccion 7.3). El no cumplimiento puede
dar como resultado penalizaciones y gastos en limpieza.
Asegurese de que sus empleados y los proveedores
de servicios que usted contrata conozcan la
importancia de proteger la calidad del agua.
