I am writing in response to the above -referenced Notice of Violation. As reported, roots and debris
blocked a manhole, causing a total spill estimated to be 10,000 gallons, with an estimated 5,000
reaching surface waters.
Remedial actions included the following. On the date of the spill discovery, April 12,2022, the
overflowing manhole was located at 9:30 AM. At 9:51 AM the spill was reported to DWQ. A sewer
jetter was transported to the site, and by 12:02 PM the manhole was cleared of a large root ball. A
press release was issued at 3:30 PM. Cleanup of the area began at that time and continued on the
morning of April 13th, using 400 pounds of pulverized lime and straw on the affected ground.
In order to be proactive in the area of the spill, surrounding sewer lines are scheduled to be videoed
and cleaned by KRG Utilities on July 21-22, 2022.
Thank you for the continued assistance of the NC Division of Environmental Quality. If you need
additional information, please contact me at (828)765-3000.
Sincerely,
