The City's Stormwater Ordinance prohibits the discharge of washwater to the stormwater system. Washwater can be discharged to the sanitary sewer. The Water Resource Department requires an Oil/Grit Separator as pretreatment. The Separator must be cleaned out at least annually. Because the wash pad is not covered with a roof, a valve was installed in the drain leading to the separator. The "normally closed" valve is designed to keep rainwater out of the sanitary sewer. After storms, rainwater will pond on the concrete wash pad because the valve is kept in the closed position. The pad must be kept clean so that only clean stormwater can be squeegeed to the storm drain. PROCEDURE 1. KEEP VALVE CLOSED at all times (unless washing a vehicle or equipment). 2. OPEN VALVE only when washing and pad is attended by staff. 3. WASH equipment and/or vehicles on the pad with all wash water draining to the wash pad drain. 4. REMOVE SOLIDS FROM PAD After washing, remove solids and place them in bags in the dumpster. 5. CLEAN THE PAD The wash pad must be clean before the next precipitation event. 6. CLOSE VALVE after pad is clean, to prevent stormwater from flowing to the sanitary sewer during wet weather. 7. SQUEEGEE CLEAN RAINWATER TO STORM DRAIN: After a precipitation event or prior to cleaning vehicle and / or equipment, squeegee the ponded clean stormwater off of the pad to the storm drain. 4. A record must be kept of the date that the oil / grit separator was cleaned out 3. If the oil / grit chamber begins to overflow at any time, protect the storm drain inlets by blocking the inlets with spill response materials.
