[EXTERNAL] SolarBee Permit
I am a long time resident of Raleigh, NC. One of the things I love about living here is enjoying the many lakes. It has been
brought to my attention that the Army Corp of Engineers has been asked to approve the SolarBee permit. This project
will not remove pollutants from the water, and will not prevent more pollution from entering the lake. It does not attack
the pollutants at their upstream source.
• The mixers will not clean up the pollution running into the lake from upstream, but rather just suppress the algae
within the lake. When the mixers are removed the algae will return and the pollution will be worse than ever, because
towns are not cleaning up their pollution.
• There is little to no evidence that these mixers will be successful. SolarBee has only been tested in small bodies
of water, not large lakes like Jordan. A recent test of SolarBee in Cabarrus County, NC did not result in restored water
quality.
• The mixers will create safety hazards to boaters and recreational users. Since the mixers sit low in the water and
have no visible lighting, boats could easily collide with the equipment, potentially in a life- threatening manner.
The Clean Water Act requires water pollutants to be controlled at their source. In order to truly clean the lake,
the Jordan Lake rules need to be implemented immediately!
Please: Don't let the Army Corps of Engineers approve the SolarBee permit! Let North Carolina set the right example.
