I just spoke to our assistant supervisor Vanessa Manuel and she said that in these situations it’s best to
send our office an email noting the exceedance. The permit language is a little vague, so better safe than
sorry, I think.

Hello Mr. Orlando,
Thank you for your help. I am including a written notification and explanation of the exceedance in the
comments section of the DMR that I am going to submit today and I talked to Mr. Chris Smith at the
Raleigh Regional Office to notify him about the exceedance.
I believe this satisfies both the 24 hour notification and the 5 day written report notification.
Please let me know if you need anything else.

Hi Ms. Hunter,
The requirement in the NPDES permit is to notify the Raleigh Regional Office by phone call within 24
hours and also send a written report within 5 days to the Raleigh Regional Office.
Raleigh Regional Office - Phone is 919-791-4200 and their address is 3800 Barrett Dr, Raleigh, NC 27609
I am copying the Raleigh Regional Office supervisor Scott Vinson, and Assistant Supervisor Vanessa
Manuel, so they can also be aware of the exceedance which occurred.
Please correspond directly with the Raleigh Regional Office and they will be able to assist you further.

Hi Anjali: I have a question about how to report an exceedance for a parameter on our NPDES
permit. Our March analytical for Selma came back with a Benzene result of 1.8 ug/l and the permit limit
is 1.19 ug/l. I have recorded the result on my monthly DMR and I am getting ready to submit it. This
facility has never had an exceedance for Benzene and the April analytical came back non-detect which is
the norm for Benzene so I have sent an e-mail to Operations asking if there was any operational activity
or anything that might have contributed to the higher than normal result and they responded that there
was nothing out of normal operational activity that would contribute to a high higher than normal
benzene level. Am I required to submit any documentation in addition to the DMR to notify the state of
this exceedance? I appreciate you help and guidance.
