Guys, it was finally nice to meet everyone today and look forward to working with everyone
on this project.
Roberto, hopefully tomorrow you will be able to visit the site for the buffer delineation. I walked
the site quite extensively about 6 months ago and did not see any features that struck me
or led me to believe there was a buffer on site. After further analysis of the Craven
Co. topo map, actual field topo, USGS Quad and recent aerial photos I know what has happened.
The drainage area to the north has been developed over the decades and piped to a point just behind
our site on Zack Taylors property (the old railroad ROW) into a deep channel. This drainage area
was therefore diverted away from our site many, many years ago, probably prior to the old Askew
lumber yard being built (now our site). The old manmade ditch that turned west was filled in
for the construction of the old bowling alley and Pepsi plant. What we have now is a partly filled
in manmade ditch or depression on our eastern property line and the same for the filled in manmade
swale that runs a short distance west that are no longer feed by a large watershed from the north.
Please note that the Craven Co. topo does not even acknowledge these ditches much less a
topo pattern that reflects a slight Swale.
Hopefully we will receive a positive report of no buffers this week. The City of New Bern has been
excited about this new development in town so we hope to continue the project.
Again it was nice talking to you guys. Scott, I wish we had more time to talk about our early
years down in Pitt and Greene Cc .... maybe next time!
