We're very pleased to provide you with this year's
Annual Water Quality Report. We want to keep you
informed about the excellent water and services we
have delivered to you over the past year. Our goal
is and always has been, to provide to you a safe
and dependable supply of drinking water. The
Town of Peachland purchases its water from the
Anson County Water System. Anson County's
source of water is Biewell Falls Lake, on the Pee
Dee River, part of the Yadkin -Pee Dee Basin. It is
pumped from the lake at the intake along the Smith
Creek outlet to Blewett Falls Lake to the Water
Filtration Plant almost 400 feet above the lake. At
the plant, the water is treated using four primary. .
processes, coagulation, sedimentation, filtration
and disinfection.

each month at 7:30 pm in the Peachland Town
Hall.
Our supplier of water, Anson County Water System,
must strictly monitor according to Federal and State
laws, and treat the water that it in tum sells to us.
During 1999, they had two exceedances of the
MCL (Maximum Contaminant Level) for turbidity
during the months of Febniary. and October by
having less than 95% of turbidity readings below
the .50 NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Unit) level.
NTU is a measure of the clarity of water. Turbidity
in excess of 5 NTU is just noticeable to the average
person and is caused by soil runoff. These
problems were intermittent and were corrected by
making adjustments in chemical dosages and
equipment to bring the plant back into compliance.
These were the only incidences of an exceedance
in the almost 2200 times during the year that
turbidity measurements were reported.
The Town of Peachland routinely monitors for
contaminants in your drinking water according to Federal
and State laws also. All drinking water, including bottled
water, is subject to potential contamination by substances
that are natural) occurring
y cun'ing or man made. These
substances can be microbes, inorganic or organic
chemicals and radioactive substances. It's important to
remember that the presence of these contaminants does
not necessarily pose a health risk.
This report describes the monitoring for the period of
January 1st to December 31st, 1999. We are proud to
report that the Town of Peachland had no detects or
violations and that your water meets or exceeds all
Federal and State requirements. The following tests were
performed: monthly Bacteriologicals, two series for Lead
& Copper, six Water Quality tests, and an annual Total
Trihalomethanes. All results were negetive, NO
DETECTS were noted.
Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in
drinking water than the -general population. lmmuno-
compromised persons such as persons with cancer
undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone
organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune
system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be
particularly at risk from infections. These people should
seek advice about drinking water from their health care
providers. More information about contaminants and
potential health effects is available by calling the
Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Drinking Water
Hotline [phone].
Thank you for allowing us to continue providing your
family with clean, quality water this year. In order to
maintain a safe and dependable water supply, we
sometimes need to make improvements that will benefit
all of our customers. These improvements are
sometimes reflected as rate structure adjustments.
Effective July 1st, 2000, the minimum charge for 2000
gallons of water will increase by $1.00. Water rates have
notchanged since August 1995. (Sewer rates will remain
Unchanged.) Thank you for your understanding.

The Town of Peachland has 257 water customers. Of these, 62 also benefit from
wastewater (sewer) service. We maintain approximately 1.67 miles of sewer line and two
sewer lift stations. All household wastewater gravity flows into one of two. lift stations.
Station #2 on Boston Avenue pumps into Station #1 on Steman Street which pumps into
Anson County's connection at the edge of town on Passaic Street. All wastewater then
gravity flows or is pumped to the Anson County Wastewater Treatment Plant located south of
Wadesboro.
To maintain these two lift stations, they are treated with Bacto-Dose once a week. , •Bacto-
Dose is a high count of selectively adapted non -:pathogenic bacteria in.a 1oz. dissolving bag.
These bacteria thrive on waste commonly found in drain lines and waste collection systems.
They double in quantity every 20 minutes. This product eliminates grease buildup in the
station and in our lines which in tum diminishes the odor normally associated with
wastewater. Both stations were operated year round with no occurances that would impact
the environment. NOTE: Maintenance of the line within the customers yard is YOUR
responsibility. The Town maintains the main line to the first clean -out on your property. From
there to your home's plumbing is your responsibility. The same applies to your water line.
Please don't allow debris of any kind to enter your drain lines. It will eventually cause a
blockage and a backup within your home or other outside clean -outs. This could make you
very unpopular with your neighbors!
The Town of Peachland recently applied to the State for grant funding that would install
sewer town-wide...(The_more customers connected,_the cheaper_sewer_would_be_for
everyone.) We have been tumed down twice. It has been suggested that we divide the town
into 4 or more sections and re -apply because smaller grants are easier to get funded. But
which section should be first and what if they don't want to be connected? Should this be an
"all or nothing" project?
The Board of Commissioners would like to hear from you, our customers, before making any
further decisions. We already have an overall design for the town -wide system so the first
step is corriplete. We do need to acquire the last three easements on private property to
better our chances -for funding. Where do we go from here?
