Description of Treatment Process:
The wastewater treatment plant uses what is known as an extended aeration type system. The
extended aeration type system means the inflow is aerated for an extended amount of time usually 24 hours
before entering the clarification zones. In this chamber aerobic bacteria decompose the organic solids in
the sewage. •
Biological waste treatment is a process which uses microorganisms to consume dissolved organic
contaminates in wastewater and convert them into additional microorganisms. Then these are mixed with
incoming wastewater containing organics. The organics are aerated for a predetermined amount of time.
After aeration, the mixture of microorganisms and water is channeled to clarification or settling zone where
the solid organic contaminates and microorganisms settle, allowing the water to be removed through a
baffle and weir trough arrangement. The organic contaminate (sludge) that settles by gravity to the bottom
of the settling chamber is pumped back to the head of the aeration chamber for mixing with the incoming
waste water.
The water that is removed then goes through a disinfecting process. This process uses a tablet
chlorine feeder and an ultraviolet light system.
I. Perforniance
The WWTP experienced some problems this year. We worked to correct these problems by scheduling for
more frequent maintenance to the UV disinfection system and beginning work on a permanent chlorine disinfection
system.
July 2001 - During the weeks of July 19th and 26th, the WWTP's fecal values were non -compliant. This was remedied
by cleaning our UV system more often. The town also began planning a permanent chlorine system.
August 2001 - The fecal was non -compliant one day during the week of August 23th.
September 2001— On September 6th and 20t, the fecal values were, again, above permitted levels.
October 2001—All parameters met.
November 2001— Feral was non -compliant on November 8a`. It was corrected for rest of month.
December 2001— Fecal was non -compliant on December 13t and 20t.
January 2002— January brought about a new set of problems. First, no samples were available on January 3`d due to a
snow storm. The courier was unable to pick up the samples. Next, the lab had a problem analyzing our TSS on the 10d'
so we received no value for that day. Then, on January 17d' the fecal was non -compliant.
February 2002— The fecal was non -compliant on three out of four sampling days in February.
March 2002— The fecal was non -compliant on March 14t. It was corrected for rest of month.
April 2002—All parameters met.
May 2002— The fecal was non -compliant on May 16t. It was corrected for rest of month.
June 2002— The BOD was non -compliant on June 6d'.
