From: Miller, Kurt [mailto:kmiller@buildingandearth.com] Sent: Wednesday, May 04, 2016 4:09 PM To: Kai Belew; Matthew Gillespie; 'Melissa Ballard (Melissa.Bal(ard@broadwaygroup.net)'; Martin, Dereck Cc: Brown, Richard Subject: RE: Sapphire, NC SHWL Locations Ladies and Gentlemen: I understand the store has rotated. However, the new requested boring locations puzzle me. For the front parking lot, the stormtech chambers will be located between borings B-4 and B-9 from our geotechnical report. In these boring we encountered 8 to 10 feet of ROCK fill. The new Stormtech system chambers are set to bear approximately 6 feet below the existing grades, which means it will be in the rock fill. We CANNOT hand auger through these materials. Additionally, we would not expect SHWT to be in the rock fill, it is likely below the rock fill at some depth that approaches the elevation of the original pond elevation (way down at the bottom of the hill). As reported previously, the drainage capacity of the rock fill is highly variable and not able to be determined as we could not keep head on our CC H P. For the other location (near the loading dock), the requested boring location is between our original borings B-1 and B-6, both which had boulder fill. We will not be able to advance our borings through these materials during our site investigation, I expect that the existing boulder fill is deeper on this side of the site, and could approach 12-15 based on the site topography. The proposed Stormtech chambers will bear at an elevation that is 3 feet above the existing boulder fill. Meaning it will bear in new structural fill. Do you want me to provide you recommendations for the fill that will meet the drainage requirements? Being that both Stormtech structures will located in either existing ROCK fill, or in newly placed structural fill over existing ROCK fill. WE CANNOT HAND AUGER THESE MATERIALS, in fact we were not able to auger through using a drill rig at some locations. I have just talked with Kai, and he is going to confirm with NCDENHR tomorrow morning. Once we have re -convened, we will develop a plan of attach. I believe we have all the information that we need without going back to the site. Dereck— please hold on the site visit and the Soil Scientist, until tomorrow when Kai calls back. I will update you as quickly as I can. Respectfully submitted, Kurt A. Miller, PE Building & Earth Sciences North Carolina Branch Manager
