Subject: Woodfield Way Culvert Replacement - NCWRC comments
Hi Brandee and Sue,
I have reviewed the information sent to me about the Woodfield Way Culvert Replacement project, which
involves replacing a triple culvert with a bridge and riprap on approximately 275 ft of unstable stream bank
on Cub Creek in Wilkes County. The project should not impact wild trout and a trout moratorium is not
needed for this project.
We are glad to see that the plans involve the installation of a bridge instead of a culvert, as this will allow
aquatic organism passage and cause less channel and bank instability. However, we recommend re-
evaluating the use of riprap on the banks and recommend instead using a bioengineering method, such as
geolifts or sloping and planting of native woody vegetation.
Thank you for allowing me to review and offer comments on the project.
Andrea
