Brad and Hannah,
We reviewed the sediment loss areas on Duplin Bridge 36 today.
They have pulled the fabric up over the slope and have installed slope drains (photos 1, 2, and 3)
They are still working on removing material inside the silt fence (within the hand clearing area) and still have silt
fence to repair and wattles to replace.
We had hoped that the standing water in loss Area 3 would have receded, but it has not gone down much (see
photo 4 – you can see the higher sand area where they have removed some material from the top of the deposit
on the left side of the photo). We were hoping that the water would go down enough to be able to see if there
was any new sediment in this “ditch,” but I think this area will remain wet since there is a natural berm between
this area and the creek.
We asked them to remove additional material at Area 2 (photo 5).
Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions. I’d be interested in your thoughts about how to reclaim any
material from the “ditch” section near loss area 3. We aren’t sure how much could have washed into it, and are
considering pumping the water down a few inches to see if this helps us assess the situation.
Thank you,
Anneliese

AW,
Lets touch base when they have finished cleaning this site and see if a site visit is warranted to assure cleanup is done
satisfactorily. Looks like a fair amount of material and work.
Brad

Hannah and Brad,
Yesterday Sean and I reviewed the subject project (B‐5639) and reviewed the sediment losses that occurred after this
past weekend’s rain events and were originally reported on Monday, 8/9. The contractor had been placing borrow on
the detour alignment. The silt fence and fabric (which will eventually encapsulate the detour fill) contained most of the
sediment but there were losses to the hand clearing areas and wetlands.
The areas are identified as:
Area 1: Approximately 10’ x 10’ and 6” deep in the vicinity of Sta. ‐L_DET‐Sta. 21+50. This has been removed by hand
tools.
Area 2: Approximately 10’ x 15’ and 6” deep in the vicinity of Sta. ‐L_DET‐Sta. 21+50. This has been partially removed by
hand tools (the higher places) but is still partially flooded, so we asked them to wait until the water recedes to reassess
to determine if more needs to be removed.
Area 3: Approximately 15’ x 8’ and up to 6” deep in the vicinity of Sta. ‐L_DET‐Sta. 20+00. They had not started removal
of this area yet. We discussed how much they would need to remove. We asked them to wait until the water recedes
before starting in the areas where the water is standing (and also because it is difficult to assess how much needs to be
removed). This is to avoid creating turbidity during removal.
I update you both as removal continues. If either of you would like to make a site visit at any stage of removal, please
let me know.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Anneliese

Brad and Hannah,

The project inspector at the subject bridge reported this morning that the project received 4 inches of rain this past
weekend. The water is still high and therefore it is difficult to access the extent of sediment losses. They plan to provide
an update when they are able.
Thanks,
Anneliese
