HomeMy WebLinkAboutNCG510518_Report of Site Visit_20210721Inspection Note to File for Climax General Store (NCG510518) Jim Gonsiewski checked on the current status of the Climax General Store with Gene Mao, Guilford County Environmental Health, on June 17, 2021. Mr. Mao responded in an email dated June 18, 2021 that the site is still open. However, the Responsible Party (RP) is deceased and the system has not been operated for several years. Since the RP is deceased, Mr. Mao submitted a request to the State -Lead Program to place the site under their jurisdiction in early 2021. Carin Kromm of the UST Section stated on June 18 that the site is currently being considered for eligibility in the State Lead Program for USTs. Pyramid Environmental of Greensboro has been operating the system. According to Mika Trifunovic of Pyramid on June 30, 2021, the last time Pyramid had visited the site was February 2019. Jim Gonsiewski visited the site on June 30, 2021. All fuel pumps had been removed and the Climax General Store was closed. Climax Smokes and Vapes currently occupies the building. It was not open at the time of the site visit. The remediation system is located in a small wooden building east of the store which was locked behind a chain link fence. The electric meter and switch were secured on a wooden post outside of the fenced area. The power switch had been turned off. With the exception of the remediation system building, the wells, piping, and system junction boxes were underground. The system is as shown in the Pyramid drawings from their 2007 NPDES permit application and 2016 permit renewal application. One site plan indicates that treated water is piped underground from the treatment system building to a discharge point into a ditch on the property line with the property immediately east of the site. This ditch is lined with rip -rap and flows to the east to a stormwater pond on the southeast corner of the adjacent property. The discharge point was overgrown with vegetation. No evidence of any recent flow from the system was observed at the discharge point and no odors or staining were noted in the ditch. No odors or sheens were observed on the stormwater pond. From the limited observations made during the site visit, it appears that the remediation system is in good condition. No obvious damage to the system was observed. View looking south of the remediation system. View looking west towards the former Climax General Store. A system junction box, monitoring wells, and air sparging wells are visible. View looking south of the electric meter and power switch adjacent to the remediation building. View looking west of the discharge point (in the vegetated area) for the remediation system.
