Katie-
My field notes for lagrange must be incomplete. I'm sure that we planted some containerized seedlings last
spring but I can't find a record of it. So, what we are going to do is plant 300 cypress and 50 containerized river
birch tomorrow. Both of these species are quite durable and should do well even with late planting. I will
reestablish Plot 2 to within the 50 ft buffer. We will then submit the first annual report in December and an as
built shortly.
Thanks, David Knowles

Hi David,
Thank you for providing the cornrnents. I will take a look at there in detail next week when I get back to the office.
However, I was able to take a quick glance over the comments and saw one thing I wanted to address. For the La Grange
site, you state the following:
To clarify, the entire Site has been planted fof an entire groi ring Season. 1 Should have been luore Specdf c 1rhen
I used the term "Winter 2012 " as the planting date. More Specifically Siippleuiental plantings were last
planted during January 28, 2012 thus one f ill growing season had been completed before the annual survey
eras conducted These included planting river birch, cypress and black gum along the stream bank. Grazing
pressure by deer, rabbits and beavers is intense at the LaGrange Site; (;E,S will continue to monitor the effect of
grazing and remediate as needed.
A BPDP for the LaGrange site was first provided to DWQ in February 2012 and approved on July 13, 2012.
When we met with you on the LaGrange site last March 2012 it was our first visit since you had begun planting
in 2010. You had stated that you had performed supplemental plantings in the Winter of 2011 due to browsing
and drought conditions. It was noted during our site visit in March, that there were additional areas that would
need more trees, especially within the very sandy portions of the site. Additionally, we stated that GES must
plant additional trees closer to the stream bank if they wished to include this as a buffer bank. We identified
areas within the first 10 -15 feet of Zone I of the Riparian Buffer as substantially lacking in trees. Due to the
substantial amount of supplemental planting needed, DWQ did not consider the LaGrange site to be "planted"
when we visited in March 2012. If GES performed the supplemental plantings requested by the DWQ, there
should have been another supplemental planting period following our site visit in March 2012. Until DWQ
receives the As Built Report citing the details of this remedial planting, DWQ cannot approve of the monitoring
report that was submitted. Upon receipt of the As Built Report, I would like to make a visit out to the site. This
is typical protocol for when I receive AsBuilt reports for mitigation banks.
Sincerely,
Katie

Katie-
Here is a response to your comments. I have to teach class this afternoon and assume that you are not working
Friday (Easter). So, I guess we can discuss via phone on Monday.
Thanks, and have a safe and enjoyable Easter.
