Subject: Troy lagoon breach
The town of Troy, located south of Ashboro in the Fayetteville region, notified us yesterday afternoon of a breach in
their equalization basin lagoon. The lagoon is losing approx. 6,000 gallons per hour and is flowing to Densons Creek —the
creek is about 50 yards from the lagoon.
DWQ staff went out to the scene yesterday. The town is using rip -rap and a special environmental fabric to band -aid the
breach. The breach is about half -way up the lagoon wall so the discharge is mostly liquids diluted with rainwater. We
have given them temporary permission to pump from the lagoon to a chlorine contact tank to provide some treatment
before discharge. The Public Water Supply folks have been informed. The nearest drinking water source is about 10-12
miles from the breach site. We have also called the Uwharrie National Forest folks since Densons Creek flows into the
forest.
DWQ staff will also be at the site today.
The equalization basin was built in the 1930's and was part of the original treatment system. An equalization basin
stores wastewater in order to equalize the flow going to the plant for treatment— a regular flow level allows the bacteria
that process the waste to be optimally productive.
Let me know if you have questions.
