Project Description:
• Length: 11.4 miles

• General Description of Project:
Widening project on 1 -40 runs east /west in Orange County. It joins 1 -85 just west of
Hillsborough, intersects Old NC 86, NC 86 and ends just west of US 15 -501 at the
Orange /Durham County line. The existing roadway is a 4 -lane grass median divided freeway
throughout this section.

• Typical Section: 4 -lane divided with approximately 40 foot grass median
• Right of Way: Varies between 245 to 330 feet total

• Structure Inventory (Bridges, RCBC, Walls, etc):
From the bridge maintenance maps, there are 13 structures along the project: 4 bridges
that carry 1 -40 over roads (Bridges 267, 268 , 270 and 271), 2 bridges that carry 1 -40 over a
railroad line (Bridges 264 and 265), 1 culvert that carry 1 -85 over a creek: Culvert 263 at
New Hope Creek (Quadruple 13 ft. x 12 ft. RCBC) and 6 bridges that carry secondary
roads over 1 -40 (Bridges 79, 262, 260, 266, 259, and 258).

• Railroad Involvement:
Two Bridges (structures 264 and 265) carry 1 -40 over SR 1725 and Norfolk Southern
Railroad. These bridges may need to be widened.
Long Range Plan History:
• DCHC MPO Long Range Transportation Plan was completed in 2009. This project
included as two separate projects: 1 -40 from US 15 -501 to NC 86 and 1 -40 from NC 86 to
1 -85. Both are widening from four to six lanes.
• Comprehensive Transportation Plan will be completed possibly by end of 2013.
• Air Quality Status: Project is in "Maintenance" area.
• Horizon Compliance Year (Long Range Transportation Plan): 2035
