NOTICE OF A PRE HEARING OPEN HOUSE AND TRANSPORTATION CORRIDOR OFFICIAL MAP ACT
PUBLIC HEARING FOR THE PROPOSED
U S 64 ASHEBORO BYPASS FROM U S 64 WEST OF ASHEBORO TO
U S 64 EAST OF ASHEBORO
TIP Project No R 2536 Randolph County
The North Carolina Department of Transportation ( NCDOT) will hold a Pre Hearing Open House and a
Transportation Corridor Official Map Act Public Hearing on Thursday November 8 2012 at Southmont
Elementary School located at 2497 Southmont Dr Asheboro
NCDOT representatives will be available at the Pre Hearing Open House between the hours of 4 00
p m and 6 30 p m to answer questions and receive comments about the proposed project The opportunity to
submit written comments or questions will also be provided Interested citizens may attend at anytime during
the above mentioned hours
A formal presentation will begin at 7 00 p m The presentation will consist of an explanation of the
proposed U S 64 Asheboro Bypass and the effects that the Protected Corridor' will have on properties that lie
within the proposed path The hearing will be open to those present for statements questions and comments
The presentation and comments will be recorded and a transcript will be prepared For more information about
the Transportation Corridor Official Map Act citizens can reference General Statute 136 44 50
NCDOT proposes to construct a four lane median divided freeway on new location from U S 64 west
of Asheboro to U S 64 east of Asheboro about 0 6 miles east of the U S 64 /Presnell Street intersection The
project will also provide for a connector road between the proposed bypass and NC 159 for the North Carolina
Zoological Park Overall the project is about 14 miles in length Additional right of way and the relocation of
- - homes and businesses will be required for construction -- - - - - -- - - - - - - — -
The purpose of the project is to improve access around the City of Asheboro and to the North Carolina
Zoo relieve traffic congestion on existing U S 64 in Asheboro and enhance high speed regional travel along
the U S 64 intrastate corridor
In May 2004 Alternative 29 Corridor was selected as the Preferred Alternative for the U S 64
Asheboro Bypass A Design Public Hearing was held in March 2008 to present the final design of the project
and the environmental document to the public Shortly after the hearing project work was suspended due to
funding limitations Since project work has resumed the design has been modified slightly The design will be
shown again at the upcoming hearing as well as presentation of the official transportation corridor
Maps displaying the location of the Asheboro Bypass are available for public review at Asheboro
Planning & Zoning Dept - Asheboro Municipal Building 146 North Church St Asheboro Randolph County
