Summary Sheet: 10' diameter impact for each
drilled pier seems excessive.
The finished diameter of the drilled shaft concrete is 4'-0". To construct the shafts
in wetlands, an oversized casing (approximately 8'-0" diameter) is placed at the
top of the shaft to contain the drilling spoils and allow for working room around the
drilled shaft excavation for placing the reinforcing steel cage and pouring the
concrete. Based on this, it is reasonable to assume that the disturbed area around
the shaft will be contained within a 10'-0" diameter circle. The total impact of the
additional 3'-0" "doughnut" around the 4'-0" diameter drilled shaft is equal to 10'-0"
diameter which is very small area equal to 0.0015 acre per shaft.
