However, ensure that existing ventilation is sufficient to prevent the circulation and/or accumulation of dust in the air. If ventilation is inadequate based on conditions of use, personal protective equipment is needed. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) • Respiratory Protection: If handling operations generate dust, wear a NIOSH-approved half -mask, air purifying respirator with dust, mist and fume filters to reduce potential for inhalation exposure. When using respirator cartridges or canisters, they must be changed frequently (following each use or at the end of the work shift) to assure breakthrough exposure does not occur. • Eye Protection: Indirect -vented, dust -tight goggles should be worn when handling this product. • Skin Protection: Skin contact with the product should be minimized or prevented through the use of suitable protective clothing, gloves (nitrile gloves are recommended) and footwear selected according to use condition exposure potential. Other Protection: All food and smoking materials should be kept in a separate area away from the storage/use location. Eating, drinking and smoking should be prohibited in areas where there is a potential for significant exposure to this material. Before eating, drinking and smoking, hands and face should be thoroughly washed. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY Stability: This product is stable at ambient temperatures and atmospheric pressures. It is not self -reactive and is not sensitive to physical impact. Incompatibilities / Conditions to avoid: This product is incompatible with strong oxidizers and aluminum. Avoid prolonged storage at elevated temperatures. Product layer on hot surface might cause glowing or autoignition. Polymerization: Hazardous polymerization is not expected to occur under normal temperatures and pressures. Decomposition Products: Under fire conditions the product may support combustion and decomposes to give off carbon oxides fumes (CO, CO2) and nitrogen oxides. 11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION INHALATION Acute exposure: No data available. Chronic exposure: No known effects for this product. SKIN Acute contact: Dermal toxicity for this product is not available. It is not considered to be irritating to skin. A related product containing 32% ferric sodium EDTA was slightly irritating to rabbit skin following repeated application. Chronic contact: No known effects for this product. EYES: This product may be minimally irritating to the eyes (based on tests with a related product containing 32% ferric sodium EDTA). Ferric sodium EDTA has shown slight transient conjunctivitis and corneal opacity in rabbits. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION (CONTINUED) INGESTION Acute exposure: The oral LD50 for Ferric sodium EDTA is 2710 mg/kg in male rats and 3160 mg/kg in female rats. Chronic exposure: Ingestion of up to 86.15 mg/kg/day of ferric sodium EDTA for 31 or 61 days by rats resulted in an accumulation of iron in the liver, spleen, and kidneys. There were no abnormal necropsy or histopathology findings. SENSITIZATION: No data available. CARCINOGENICITY: IARC, NTP, ACGIH and OSHA do not classify this material as a carcinogen or suspect carcinogen. MUTAGENICITY: Ferric sodium EDTA, when tested as a pure substance, gave a negative response in the Ames Assay and the E. Coli bacterial reversion assay, but a positive response in the Mouse Lymphoma Assay (in vitro) with and without metabolic activation at concentrations which were cytotoxic. The positive response was attributed to a possible sensitivity of the cells to abnormal iron concentrations. TERATOGENICITY / EMBRYOTOXICITY: EDTA and its sodium salts have been reported, in some studies, to cause developmental toxicity in laboratory animals only at exaggerated doses that were toxic to the mother. These effects are likely associated with zinc deficiency due to chelation. Exposures having no effect on the zinc level of the mother should have no effect on the fetus. OTHER TOXICOLOGICAL EFFECTS: None known. TARGET ORGANS: Skin and eyes. 12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION Ecotoxicity: The following data is available for Ferric sodium EDTA: Test (Species) Exposure / Duration Test Results Fish (bluegill) 96-h LC50 = 2592 mg/L (100% active) NOEC = 1792 mg/L Daphnia 24-h EC50 = 110 mg/L Algae (S. capricornutum) 72-h EC50 = 76.7 mg/L Chemical Fate / Degradation • Abiotic: 90-94% photodegradation (aqueous) in 24 hours. • Biotic: 89% biodegradation in 5 days when evaluated using a mixed population of aerated bacteria. Other information: Ferric sodium EDTA component is not likely to bioaccumulate due to its high water solubility and a Log Pow = -10.6 (based on EPIWIN model). 13. DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS Waste Disposal: In its unused condition, this product is not considered to be a RCRA-defined hazardous waste by characteristics or listings. It is the responsibility of the waste generator to evaluate whether his wastes are hazardous by characteristic or listing. Dispose in accordance with all local, state and federal regulations. NOTE — State and local regulations may be more stringent than federal regulations. Container Disposal: Containers should be cleaned of residual product before disposal or return. Since emptied containers retain product residue, follow label warnings even after the container is emptied. Empty containers should be disposed of or shipped in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations.
