2011 Monitoring Report — MY -01
1 January 2012
I. Executive Summary
The Greensboro Gateway Gardens project included a stream relocation of approximately
160 linear feet of Unnamed Tributary (UT) to South Buffalo Creek, located within the
Cape Fear River Basin. The NCDWQ has assigned South Buffalo Creek (Stream index
no. 16- 11 -14 -2) a classification of C NSW. The "C" classification denotes freshwaters
suitable for aquatic life propagation and survival, fishing, wildlife, secondary recreation
and agriculture. The "NSW "classification denotes nutrient sensitive waters that need
additional nutrient management. The relocated stream feeds the onsite preserved
jurisdictional wetlands. The pre - project stream classified as a E5 -05 channel and has
been restored to a C5 for the entire length.
The Greensboro Gateway Gardens Phase I stream relocation was completed in 2010. The
planting of approximately 2656 sq. ft. (0.061 ac.) was completed in the fall /winter of
2010/2011. The stream banks directly downstream of the culvert at the stream
origination varied from the designed planting plan. The stream banks were armored with
riprap for increased stability due to high potential stress and close proximity to the
adjacent sidewalk. Numerous additional small herbaceous species were planted adjacent
to the headwalls of the 60" RCP crossing headwalls.
Monitoring will occur annually for a minimum of three years and will consist of a visual
assessment of the stream stability and stream bank and buffer vegetation survivability.
The current assessment is for monitoring year 1 of 3 (MY -01). Photo points have been
established throughout the stream bank and buffer area. For each subsequent monitoring
period, photos shall be taken at the same location. If deemed necessary, recommendations
for increased monitoring, maintenance, or repair shall be made in the annual monitoring
reports.
A. Stream
The onsite relocated stream portion begins at the outlet of the AquaSwirl stormwater
treatment structure. The stream flows from the outlet for approximately 59 LF into a 60"
RCP for a length of approximately 18 LF. After the stream exits the 60" RCP, it flows for
approximately 80 LF until it runs into the jurisdictional wetlands. The stream was
constructed with four single wing rock vane structures and four constructed riffles.
Structurally, the stream is stable and functioning correctly. No evidence of bank erosion
or stream bed degradation was observed. Figure 1 shows the stream, structures and photo
point locations.
B. Vegetation
The stream bank and buffer area was evaluated for herbaceous and woody stem survival
rates. Figure 2 shows the stream and buffer monitoring area outlined with the plants
installed per the construction plans. Within the monitoring area, 236 plants were to be
installed as per the planting plan. Of those 236 plants, 32 plants were either not found or
have perished. This represents a success percentage of 86 %, which exceeds the 75%
success criteria.

C. Bankfull Events
Several bankfull events have occurred within the current monitoring year. A rainfall
event on October 12, 2011 of 1.97" produced a bankfull event that was confirmed by a
site visit conducted by City of Greensboro personnel. The following table shows a record
of all the dates during the current monitoring period in which a rainfall event of 2" or
greater.
