Dear Mayor Estridge:
On June 19, 2000, I met with Daniel Wilson, ORC for the Town of Ansonville's ,
wastewater treatment facility; The visit was to give technical assistance to 'the ORC . - •
regarding the recent ongoing months of noncompliance with the NPDES Pemit No. •
NC00081825. Although the original concern was related.to noncompliant fecal.coliform
counts, the root"cause appears to be high BOD spikes resulting in higher thari.norrnal •
sludge production and• insufficient wasting. The effluent was found to be turbid with
stragglerjfloc and the clarifier sludge blankets were 5-6 feet deep.. The short term goals
are to:...
1) Double the daily sludge wasting to reduce:the clarifier blankets to a depth of 1-2
feet deep. The return sludge, rate was reduced today, as much as possible, to
reduce the clarifier loading rate to try and thicken the return sludge since the
wasting is off the same pipe line. This thicker sludge wasted -to the digester will
remove more pounds with less volume to: be hauled off site.
2) The sludge age reduction along with the solids inventory should clarify the
effluent within a week to 10 days and the disinfection should return to normal
when the effluent total suspended solids are below 5 mg/1.
The long term goal is to get the UV system back into operational and determine
a cleaning schedule to make the system reliable. If' still necessary, the BOD spikes
should be traced and eliminated to prevent future upsets:.
