My comments are based on a review of file information and my evaluation of the municipal wastewater treatment facility during a Compliance Evaluation Inspection conducted, April 3 and May 4, 2012. The Town's WWTF is a partially in ground metal package type unit.During the tour of the facility it was noted that much of the facility is showing significant signs of corrosion. Corrosion in metal facilities like the Town of Ansonville WWTF, left unchecked, can destroy the structural integrity of the facility. In extreme cases can cause structural failure. During the inspection it was noted that several of the supporting struts or braces have corroded completely through. The Town has been asked to address the condition of the facility as soon as possible. As with other matters involving the structure of wastewater treatment facilities a North Carolina registered Professional Engineer may need to provide a plan of action for immediate and long term operation and maintenance of the facility. In addition to the above the effluent pipe and right of way are in need of evaluation and maintenance. Further it is recommended that the Town's sanitary sewer system be evaluated to determine if infiltration/inflow is a problem and whether or not there are components in need of repair or replacement. During my visit with the Town repair/replacement options and regionalization by connecting to a nearby wastewater treatment facility was discussed. The Division of Water Quality considers regionalization as a preferable alternative to individual point source discharges.
