Larry Fox Lots 6-7 - Shoreline Stabilization
DWQ Project # 11-0870
Jackson County
Response deadline: December 2, 2011
Dear Mr. Fox:
The Division of Water Quality (DWQ) has performed a preliminary review of a 401 Water Quality Certification
application submitted for the above referenced property. Additional information will be required in order to
complete the review process.
Please provide the following information so that we may continue to review your project.
Additional Information Requested:
Please provide photo documentation of the shoreline that is to be stabilized.
2. Please provide an estimate of the slope of the land at the shoreline (i.e., 2:1 slope, 1:1 slope (2
foot run: 1 foot rise, etc.)).
3. The DWQ, along with Duke Energy Lake Services, require that you evaluate the feasibility of a)
bioengineered techniques (i.e., native plantings to alleviate soil erosion in lieu of or in
combination with hard structures), b) rip-rap only, and c) the combination of dry stack wall and
rip-rap (i.e., part of the shoreline stabilized with rip-rap and part of the shoreline stabilized with
dry stack rock). The DWQ will not approve rip-rap or hard structures until the bioengineered
(vegetative planting) option is evaluated.
If a dry stack wall is approved, it must be built in combination with rip-rap (as shown in Figure
3). This is a Duke Energy Lake Services requirement.
4. Describe how the work will be conducted. DWQ and Duke Energy Lake Services prefer that
work be conducted from a barge (to minimize impacts on existing shoreline vegetation).
