One quick question ...I understand the reason Leyland Cypress are not desired but...we were not proposing them in the park area at all but rather as a visual barrier along the one residents house where the trail goes immediately south of Union Street. It was intended more as a visual barrier for privacy and public safety from pedestrians proposed for the new trail leading up to Union Street (i.e., only a 50 foot linear barrier of such). In this same area, I believe there is no stream mitigation efforts (just greenway trail) - the stream at this portion is preservation only. So, that being said - can we either leave the Leylands just in this area exclusively (or...) can you recommend an alternative high quality tree (no pines) that will grow quickly to achieve a thick/tall visual barrier as a Leyland Cyrus might do? Again - just for this one property owners residence. Whatever you say we will do. Thanks, Mike Michael L. Babuin, PhD, P.G. Environmental Specialist Town of Cary -- Engineering Dept. P.O. I doubt we will get a response from USACE. So I think we are ok to schedule a meeting with the residents of Dorothy Park. I hope this helps everyone to have a good weekend!!! We will proceed with the project. PS. The Leyland Cypress was included in response to a request from the adjacent landowner to screen him from the new greenway. We do not have any room to do any stream restoration in that reach (the easement between to two houses is too narrow) so we will not be asking for any credit. So I figure we can comply with the landowners request. I should have explained why we had Leyland Cypress on there -- at least I know that you gave it a thorough review!!!! We are supposed to be planting native species on mitigation sites. Otherwise, it looks good to go. The people living adjacent to the park had expressed concern and indicated that they wanted the Town to retain some of the lawn areas within the park. As a result, the Town of Cary narrowed the buffer to retain some lawn areas and, in response, you folks agreed to a slightly reduced credit ratio on the Dorothy Park reach of the stream restoration project. In response to concerns from the local residents about the "weedy" appearance of the proposed naturalized buffer area, the Town has committed to "jump start" the naturalization process. In addition to the grass and streambank livestaking, this includes a commitment to planting 3-gallon sized shrubs on 5-foot centers and 3 inch caliper sized trees on 12' centers -- this represents a significant increase in the density and size of the material being planted to establish the buffer for the Dorothy Park reach. I have attached a copy of the two plan sheets that cover Dorothy Park so that you can have a look at the proposed plan. The Town is confident that this planting plan will make the local residents happy and the regulators happy. But, prior to presenting the planting plan to the local residents, the Town wants to confirm that the USACE and DWQ are okay with the planting plan and that the Town will be eligible for the stream restoration credits before they present the plan to the local residents. Request: Please review and confirm the proposed planting plan and confirm that the the Town will be eligible for stream restoration credits at the previously agreed upon reduced credit ratio Thanks very much for your help. Please call if you have any questions.
