NOTICE OF A CITIZENS INFORMATIONAL WORKSHOP FOR THE PROPOSED
MODIFICATION OF THE 1-77 AND SR 5544 (CATAWBA AVENUE)
INTERCHANGE

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will hold the
above Citizens Informational Workshop on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 between the
hours of 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in the Cornelius Town Hall located at 21445
Catawba Avenue, Cornelius.
Interested individuals may attend this informal workshop at their
convenience during the above stated hours. Department of Transportation
representatives will display maps and will be available to answer questions and
receive comments from the public. There will be no formal presentation.
NCDOT proposes to modify the existing diamond shape interchange at I-
77/SR 5544 (Catawba Avenue) to a Divergent Diamond Interchange (DDI).
Instead of building a Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI), as once proposed,
the new DDI design has been adopted to improve the traffic on 1-77/Catawba
Avenue Interchange. The DDI design is a relatively new concept. The design of
the proposed DDI is very simple and extremely cost effective, and provides a
better level of service (LOS) at the Interchange. The purpose of the project is to
reduce congestion at the 1-77/Catawba Avenue interchange. The need for the
project is due to the substantial growth in the area and expected future congestion.
