NC 27405 Re: Groundwater Monitoring Report 1101 NC 61. Whitsett, Guilford County, NC Greensboro Travel Center Incident No. 30318 Injection Permit W10400164 Dear Ms. Lepard: On behalf of TravelCenters of America (TA), SAIC Energy, Environment, & Infrastructure, LLC (SAIC) is submitting this Groundwater Monitoring Progress Report to the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for the above -referenced facility (Figure 1). The corrective action plan (CAP) for this portion of the site approved oxygen releasing compound (ORC) installation in wells CSAMW-3 and DDMW-2; required semi- annual sampling of the wells around the facility diesel dispenser pad (CSAMW-1, CSAMW-2, CSAMW-3, CSAMW-4, and DDMW-2) until the groundwater meets DENR's 2L Standards; and stipulated semi-annual analysis of Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MADEP) volatile petroleum hydrocarbons (VPl-I) and extractable petroleum hydrocarbons (EPH) in addition to annual for analysis of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), in accordance with EPA publication SW-846. Semi- annual sampling was first conducted October 2010. The second sampling was delayed to July 2011, with DENR permission, to order that an underground injection control (UIC) permit be issued for the ORC and evaluated. This report covers the period through October 19. 2011. METHODS AND OBSERVATIONS On October 18, 2011, SAIC gauged and purged the monitoring wells at the diesel dispenser pad prior to sampling. No liquid -phase hydrocarbon (LPH) was measured or observed on the groundwater in any monitoring well. Groundwater elevations were lower than the previous observation in July 2011 and the hydrologic gradient was southerly (Figure 2). Five monitoring wells (CSAMW-1, CSAMW-2, CSAMW-3, CSAMW-4. and DDMW-2) were sampled in accordance with ASTM Method D-4448 on October 19, 2011. Groundwater samples were placed in laboratory -provided glassware and preserved according to ASTM Method D- 3694. Samples were submitted to Accutest Laboratory for analysis of benzene, toluene., ethylbenzene, xylenes, PAH, and MADEP VPH and EPH. Analytical results are compared to 63I0 fl enlo+wn tBoufetta►d, ]farris6urg, TA 171121 done 717-901-8843 /` AX 717-901-81 Q3l iwm.saic.com Ms. Mindy Lepard 2 January 24. 2012 historical results and 2L Standards on Tables 3A and 3B included as Attachment A. FINDINGS Copies of laboratory reports are Groundwater sample results from the October 19, 2011 event at the diesel dispenser pad indicated an increased EPH concentration compared to the July 2011 result, but reduction of all parameters overall since 2009. Groundwater elevations were lower, which may allow higher concentrations of hydrocarbons explaining the increase in EPH. EPH only exceeded 2L standards for C9-C 1 S Aliphaties (adjusted) and C9-C22 Aromatics (adjusted) in DDMW-2. Also, benzene at 1.4 micrograms per liter (ug/L) in DDMW-2 marginally exceeded the 2L Standard. No other parameters or wells exceeded the 2L Standard. Dissolved oxygen increased for all wells since July 2011, presumably as a result of the ORC. This should further stimulate biodegradation of the hydrocarbons. Groundwater migration rates are slow, and downgradient CSAMW-1 and CSAMW-2 indicate compliance with 2L Standards. This condition and the fact that surrounding receptors are hundreds of feet away indicate no potential of impact to from the site. Based on monitoring the diesel dispenser pad, SAIL and TA recommend continued sampling for Incident No. 30318. The next scheduled sampling will be in April, 2012. Please contact the undersigned at (717) 901-8843 should you have any questions or concerns. Respectfully submitted, SAIC ENERGY, ENVIRONMENT, & IN FRASTRUCTIJRE,- LLC. f v r vt F 8 Kent V.
