Memorandum
To: Todd Tugwell, Chair
PACG-TC
From: Sue Homewood, DWQ WSRO
Subject: October 2010 NCEEP Closeout Site Visits
Wells Creek (Alamance County)
According to the Closeout Summary, the project consisted of 3,627 LF of Priority 1 stream restoration and 2,116 feet of
Enhancement 1. The stream was generally in good condition at the time of the site visit, and a majority of the buffer was
also successful in terms of both species diversity and density. EEP has indicated there will be supplemental planting in
one buffer location of Reach 1, two buffer locations within Reach UT, and three buffer locations of Reach 2. Additional
investigation may indicate that not all of these areas will require supplemental planting. All areas are relatively small and
surrounded by successful buffer areas.
DWQ has concerns that swine have been accessing portions of Reach 1. To date the damage is not extensive, however
proper buffer and stream protection must be addressed prior to closing out Reach 1 of this project.
Upon acceptable resolution of the swine encroachment issues and completion of the supplemental planting, DWQ feels
that this project will be fully successful, and full credit (5,038 SMUs) should be awarded.
Brown Bark Park (Guilford County)
This project consisted of restoration of 2,812 LF of stream within an urban City Park. The stream was in good condition
at the time of the site visit, and buffers were adequate in width, species diversity and stem density.
DWQ feels that this project is fully successful, and full credit (2,812 SMUs) should be awarded.
Big Warrior Creek (Wilkes County)
EEP has elected to delay requesting close out of this project to resolve some issues.
DWQ noted that buffers are extremely narrow within sections of this project and we request documentation of the
percentage of buffers that are less than 25 feet prior to a request for close out for the project. In addition, one cross vane
and one stream bank at the top of Mountain Creek require repair.
