SUMMARY OF CULTURAL RESOURCES REVIEW
Brief description of review activities, results of review, and conclusions:
Review of HPO quad maps, relevant background reports, historic designations roster, and indexes was
undertaken on August 26, 2010. Based on this review, there were no existing NR, SL, LD, DE, or SS
properties in the Area of Potential Effects Jones County GIS mapping (2008) including aerial
photography and tax information revealed no structures more than 50 years old exists within the APE.
Brief Explanation of why the available information provides a reliable basis for reasonably predicting
that there are no unidentified historic properties in the APE.
The Jones County Historic Architecture Survey was conducted in 1997. No historic structures were
identified near the APE of this project. The Jones County Tax Parcel Data is considered valid for the
purposes of determining the likelihood of historic resources being present.

A map review and site file search was conducted at the Office of State Archaeology on Tuesday, August
31, 2010. No previously recorded archaeological sites are situated within the currently defined APE,
project study area, or general vicinity (5 mile radius). A review of NRUP listed archaeological
properties/districts within Jones County was completed which identified no such resources within or
adjacent to the presently defined APE. Furthermore, topographic maps, historic maps (NCMaps website),
USDA soil survey maps (Sx), aerial photographs, and the Google street view map application were
utilized/inspected to gauge environmental factors that may have contributed to historic or prehistoric
settlement within the project limits, and to assess the level of modem, slope, agricultural, hydrological,
and other erosive-type disturbances within and surrounding the archaeological APE.
Brief Explanation of why the available information provides a reliable basis for reasonably predicting
that there are no unidentified historic properties in the APE:
Due largely to the diminutive scope of the proposed project and relatively minute construction footprint
subsuming only the existing right-of-way, significant archaeological or cultural resources are unlikely to
be affected by the project. Soil survey maps have mapped Stockade fine sandy loam within the presently
defined APE, a very poorly drained soil in shallow drainageways of the county, and aerial photographs
illustrate that the project area is largely characterized by disturbance from cultivation/agriculture. -
Furthermore, the presence of copious drainage ditches surrounding the general project area demonstrate
that much of this land was drained, reclaimed swampland. No further archaeological work is
recommended for this rural, state-funded construction project.
