Based upon recent correspondence in relation to the Cumberland Knob Maintenance facility that Altamont provided you in November 2014, we would like to provide you an update on this site as well.. Similar to the Cumberland Knob site, an air sparging system was installed at this site before it was required to register underground air injection in North Carolina. The Balsam Gap Maintenance Facility (the site) is located at mile marker 442.8 along the Blue Ridge Parkway, in Jackson County, North Carolina. The general location of the facility is depicted on Figure 1(c6MR& t°es : W). A site plan, showing permanent monitoring locations and other prominent features, is included as Figure 2. The Balsam Gap site operates as the National Park Service Blue. Ridge Parkway fleet maintenance facility. Until 1993, the petroleum used for the refueling of parkway maintenance vehicles was contained in three underground storage tanks ,(USTs) at the site, as follows: one 1,000-gallon gasoline tank, one 1,500-gallon gasoline tank, and one 2,000-gallon gasoline tank. A timeline of assessment and remediation activities is as follows January 1993—The USTs were removed April 1994—A soil assessment was conducted May 1994—An Initial Site Characterization Report was completed • January/February 1995—Monitoring wells were installed • " May 1995—Corrective Action Plan (CAP) was completed An airsparging(AS)/soil vapor extraction (SVE) remediation system was subsequently installed. The remediation system includes six air sparge points and -three soil vapor extraction points. Routine groan tpter sampling events have been conducted since the monitoring wells have been installed and most -recently changed from quarterly to semiannual events. Altamont understands that the following contaminants have historicalfybien detected in excess of the 2L standard in groundwater samples collected from the monitoring wells at the Balsam Gap maintenance facility site: benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, total xylenes, methyl-tert-butyl ether (MTBE), naphthalene, n-prop-ylbenzene, 1,2,37trichloropropane, and 1,2,4-tri m ethyl be nze ne. Monitoring wells MW-10 and MW- 11, located within and -down -gradient of the source area, have recently contained detections of site constituents above the laboratory reporting limit and 2L standard. The current plume size (for benzene) extends to approximately 1,600 square feet from.MW-10 to MW-5. ,.The remed iation. system is currently operating. Repairs and updated components were installed on the remediation = system in the Fall of 2014. An Injection Event Record indicating the air sparging air injection information is attached. Please let rt a know if you would_like any-#urtherififormation regarding this site.
